THE TRUTH ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE FROM INSUREMYTRIP.COM

Oct 22nd, 2007

WARWICK, RI, October 22, 2007—Travel today is fraught with troubles such as delayed or canceled flights, lost or misdirected luggage, even personal issues that impact one’s ability to travel.  For these reasons, more travelers than ever are also buying travel insurance to protect themselves, their trips, and their financial investments.

“It only takes one bad travel experience for a person to understand that trip insurance is not a luxury, it’s a necessity,” explains Peter Evans, Executive Vice President of InsureMyTrip.com. “So it’s extremely important to know the facts and particulars of travel insurance such as when you need to purchase, what is covered, and how to select the best plan for your travel needs.”

Unforeseen Events: Travel insurance, like all insurance, is predicated on the occurrence of unforeseen events. Therefore, you need to purchase travel insurance before your trip for maximum coverage and peace of mind protection against the unexpected.

Tour Operator Cancels: Travel insurance does not provide coverage if a tour operator cancels due to a lack of participants.  However, some insurance companies do offer a Cancel For Any Reason policy that allows you to cancel your trip for any reason you choose, up to two days prior to your departure.

Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Most policies do have a pre-existing condition exclusion. While the definition of a Pre-Existing Medical Condition varies from company to company, generally, the definition of a pre-existing medical condition  is any injury, disease or illness to you, a traveling companion, family member, or business partner which occurs prior to and including the effective date of your insurance. If you do have a pre-existing condition, most policies offer a waiver that can be obtained by purchasing trip insurance within 7-21 days of making your first trip payment.

Baggage Delayed For Less Than 24 Hours: Many travel insurance policies do reimburse for baggage delayed less than 24 hours, many even stipulate a minimum delay of 12 hours.  The coverage reimburses you for necessity items purchased in the event that your baggage is delayed or misdirected. Most policies however, do not cover for delayed baggage on return flights.

Death/Illness of a Pet: These events are covered by a Cancel For Any Reason policy which provides up to 75% reimbursement of your non-refundable costs.

Sports Injuries: Most Travel Medical Policies do cover sports injuries when an ‘Adventure Sports’ rider is added to the policy.  Additionally, coverage can also be secured as an option with select Trip Cancellation Policies.

Pregnancy and Childbirth: Most policies cover unforeseen complications of pregnancy. Normal childbirth is not unforeseen and therefore not covered.

Psychological Illness or Self-Inflicted Injuries: Some policies will cover for trip cancellation/trip interruption for mental, nervous or psychological disorders requiring inpatient hospitalization of three days or more.

Spouse Files for Divorce Prior to Trip: Cancel For Any Reason policies may again be the policy of choice for this situation.  Additionally, one insurance company offers coverage for trip cancellation if you or your traveling companion become legally separated or divorced after insurance has been purchased and prior to your departure date, provided the insurance was purchased within 14 days of the initial trip deposit or payment.
