Human Swine Influenza in Mexico

1. Can clients cancel their trip as a result of the travel warning issued for Mexico?
Our Travel Insurance plans do include coverage for trip cancellation, interruption and travel delay if a traveler is quarantined to an area because of possible contact with the swine flu. We also provide coverage if an insured person or immediate family member contracts the “swine flu” and the insured person needs to cancel their trip.
The Department of State is alerting US citizens of the health risks of travel to Mexico at this time due to an outbreak of H1N1 “swine flu.” The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an April 27 notice recommending that American citizens avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico at this time. CDC’s notice also suggests precautions that travelers and US citizen residents in Mexico can take to reduce their risk of infection while in Mexico. RBC Insurance clients wanting to cancel their trip, as a result of the travel warning due to human swine influenza, are not eligible for cancellation coverage under our policy.
We recommend that, as a first recourse, clients contact their travel agent, tour operator or carrier to determine what options are available for change of date options, travel credits or refund.
RBC Insurance clients wishing to change their travel plans as a result of the human swine influenza will be able to update their travel insurance for equivalent coverage, at no extra cost, to reflect their new travel dates, providing the length and cost of the trip remains the same, or receive a full refund on their travel insurance premium paid if there has been no claim submitted.
RBC Insurance clients who have elected to travel to Mexico in spite of the travel warning will still be eligible for medical coverage under our medical insurance policy.
2. Many of the airlines, tour operators and cruise lines, have been very flexible with their policies on rescheduling travel arrangements. Can RBC Insurance policies be changed if clients decide to change their travel dates?
RBC Insurance clients wishing to change their travel plans as a result of the human swine influenza will be able to update their travel insurance for equivalent coverage, at no extra cost, to reflect their new travel dates, providing the length and cost of the trip remains the same.
3. If a client contracts the human swine influenza while in Mexico or other destinations, will they be covered?
Clients who are currently visiting Mexico or other destinations who contract the human swine influenza will be eligible for medical coverage under our medical insurance policy, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
4. Can clients cancel because they are afraid to travel to Mexico or other destinations due to the human swine flu influenza outbreak?
RBC Insurance travel insurance products have been designed to provide a wide range of coverage for a variety of situations. “Fear of travelling” is not covered under our travel insurance policy.
