Travel Alerts vs. Travel Warnings: Are You Covered?

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Bri, Marketing

If you’re reading this, I suspect you, like most of us, have been keeping up with the news surrounding this weekend’s State Department Travel Alert.  For those who haven’t yet heard, here’s a quick recap, from the government’s travel security website:

“The State Department alerts U.S. citizens to the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe.  Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks.  European governments have taken action to guard against a terrorist attack and some have spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions.” (more…)

Delayed and Confused

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Bri, Marketing

It’s not uncommon for me to find, as I catch up daily on the blogs and news feeds of many in the travel industry, that there are people out there who have significant questions about travel insurance.  They range in specificity and validity, from the “Isn’t that some newfangled hoax?” variety to the “I’m puzzled, I’m frustrated, and I’m contacting a consumer advocate” category.  As with almost any industry or product imaginable, there are those who swear by travel insurance and those who steer clear.  I usually try to simply gauge the severity of the buzz around any particular message board or comment section and then move on to other things — often, other helpful consumers are already lighting up the same conversational arenas with very good answers or steering the chat in another direction before I can compose a response, and anyway, the best defense is a good offense. When Airlines Won’t Pay

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Bri, Marketing

I couldn’t help but notice that the NY Times recently ran an article about the frustrations travelers are experiencing lately, as airlines find ways to avoid taking any kind of responsibility for delays and cancellations that severely disrupt people’s plans.  As I read the article, a little voice in my head kept saying, “…but if you have travel insurance, you might be covered….”  But alas, the Times piece doesn’t mention travel insurance at all. Be Prepared for Summer Travel

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Becky, User Experience Analyst

InsureMyTrip recently ran a blog contest, in which employees were encouraged to submit posts for the blog in two categories.  The following post was the winner in the “Travel Insurance and Travel News” category.  Congratulations, Becky!

The start of the summer means the start of many people’s vacations.  While traveling is exciting and definitely something to look forward to, it can also be stressful.  Flying can be a hassle, and with the recent Spirit Airlines and British Airways strikes, you become painfully aware that there are so many things that can go wrong with air travel.  Travel insurance is a great tool when it comes to flying because package plans provide coverage for delayed or canceled flights.  These plans also protect you in the event that your baggage is lost or delayed.  And if your trip is interrupted due to a covered reason, there is coverage for that too. You can have your choice for hospital of choice

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Bri, Marketing

We were pleased to note that respected travel guru Arthur Frommer had mentioned, on his official blog, the existence of “hospital of choice” plans among the smorgasbord of travel insurance options available to consumers.  Having the ability to request a particular hospital in the event that you have to be evacuated for medical attention during a trip is certainly a benefit worth pointing out to travelers.  However, Mr. Frommer’s article only mentions one specific company.  In the interest of sharing the wealth, we thought it was important to point out that, as a comparison website, we offer several choices from a range of companies.  We also figured that, while we’re on the subject, you might want to know exactly what Hospital of Choice means when you’re comparing travel insurance. Travel provider strikes: does my travel insurance policy apply?

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Bri, Marketing

Savvy travelers are probably already aware of three new strike threats looming in the air travel industry.  AirTran and American Airlines have both recently announced votes that will allow their union leaders to call strikes in the near future, while Spirit Airlines pilots are already on strike.  These new announcements, following in the wake of the British Airways stoppages, are bound to give travelers a moment of pause. DOT regulations and travel delay coverage

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Meghan, Customer Care

Travelers should be aware that airlines may be implementing a slight increase in flight cancellations in the near future. As of April 29th, a new Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation has taken effect which will levy fines against airline companies for planes that are delayed on the tarmac for 3 or more hours. The regulation states that passengers must be allowed to disembark after 3 hours, as long as doing so does not cause any safety issues. (more…)

Volcanoes, airport closings and travel insurance

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

John, Customer Care Manager

Volcanic ash has caused a halt to air travel in much of Europe.  If you have purchased a travel insurance policy prior to the eruption and your flight has been canceled or your accommodation at your destination has been made uninhabitable because of the volcanic eruption, then you may have coverage under pre-departure trip cancellation or post-departure trip interruption.
