Trip Cancellation Coverage

Trip Cancellation insurance is a standard benefit offered with most travel insurance Comprehensive Plans. This travel insurance benefit provides reimbursement of all your pre-paid, non-refundable expenses should you need to cancel your trip unexpectedly.

Important things to note when you’re researching Trip Cancellation products include:

Covered Reasons

In most travel insurance policies, there will be an included list of covered reasons for cancellation. These are situations the insurance company considers legitimate as factors in making the decision to cancel your trip. It’s essential that you are familiar with this list of covered reasons in any insurance policy you’re considering purchasing, since these are guidelines by which any claim you may need to file will be judged. If you’re not comfortable with the list of covered reasons provided to you, and feel you need more flexibility in making the decision to cancel your trip, you may want to consider purchasing a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policy.

Exclusions

In addition to covered reasons, travel insurance plans may also list exclusions that you’ll need to be aware of before you purchase a policy. Exclusions are things that absolutely won’t be covered by your insurance company. Examples may include having to cancel your trip because you were detained by customs at the airport and couldn’t get on your flight; cancelling because of a work obligation; or cancelling because of an illness or injury related to a pre-existing medical condition. There are waivers available for some exclusions, such as the Pre-Existing Conditions waiver, so knowing what’s excluded in your travel insurance policy – and what your individual needs and concerns are – can help you ask the right questions to get valuable additional coverage.

Question:

My mother in law is 81 an scared to death to fly, my father in law is being honored in Europe as a veteran, what is at the last minute she will not go after I have purchased her ticket, can she be reimbursed.
PatL,

Answer:

Unfortunately, your concern is not a covered reason for cancellation under any policy. The only way to have some coverage would be to buy a plan that has a Cancel For Any Reason rider. Cancel for any reason would allow her to "change her mind" as you have described and receive a partial reimbursement under the insurance policy. There are 3 conditions that MUST be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider, as follows: Purchase the policy within 14-30 days of Initial Trip Payment (policy specific); Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip must be canceled more than 2 days prior to departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you 75% of your trip costs, unless otherwise noted. The Cancel For Any Reason will show under its own box. Please make sure to click on the underlined phrase to view the requirements to qualify for this option. If you decide to buy this Rider, make sure to click on the box near Cancel For Any Reason and hit the 'buy' button at the top or bottom of the quote. Please note that these policies are State-specific.

Question:

I am an airline pilot and I fly standby, aka space available. Are there any types of coverages that will refund my prepaid accommodations expenses, if I am not able to get on a flight due to space. Thanks

Answer:

Unfortunately, no, because you do not have a scheduled flight and are flying standby, possible delays and cancellations are foreseen and would not be covered.

Answer:

The Comprehensive Package Plans are the only plans we offer that include Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits. Unfortunately, we do not offer these benefits without the medical included.

Question:

If I apply for a visa to Iran and it does not get to me on time....do I get a refund for tkt? refund of change fees?
chrisT,

Answer:

Cancellation is for specific listed reasons. Not obtaining your visa ahead of time, or in a timely manner is not a reason for cancellation under any policy. The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen sickness, accidental injury or death to you, a travelling companion or an immediate family member. To see all of the covered reasons to cancel or interrupt your trip, please click on the dollar amount that appears NEXT to the words "Trip Cancellation" when viewing a quote.
