Do I Need Travel Insurance?
Many travelers wonder whether or not they really need travel insurance. Is it worth it? Are there any downsides? Who should really be thinking about buying travel insurance?
The short answer to this question is: Everybody.
The more nuanced answer is: Everybody who is planning a trip and feels that they could ill afford to lose the money they’ve spent if they were unable to travel; OR, Everybody who is planning a trip and feels that they could ill afford to incur any additional costs for medical care, unexpected changes of plans, or lost or damaged property.
Travel insurance isn’t a great investment for every trip. People who are taking a road trip to Grandma’s house probably won’t need travel insurance. People planning a small weekend getaway relatively close to home probably won’t need travel insurance. But all other travelers should at least consider the options and make an informed decision.
Buying a travel insurance policy is a smart move if you are feeling at all cautious about the financial aspect of your trip, if you think there’s any possibility of illness or injury (your own or a loved one’s) hindering your plans, or if you’re concerned about potential weather-related problems such as a hurricane derailing your trip. It’s also a smart move if you’re traveling with young children, who may be more likely to get sick, or if you think your work situation may be changing at some point before you depart. It’s good for people who are taking just one short trip, and it’s good for those who are taking several trips or who are traveling for months at a time.
