You buy insurance for the terrible, just in case. So, you have to be comfortable spending (in my case) hundreds of dollars, even if you don't need it. I do wish the plan provided a cost reduction for purchase of medications for travel to exotic locations. I took malaria medications for my trip, and, for the 2 of us, it was about $150. In my opinion, there should be some credit to my insurance or the insurance company should offer a reduced cost for these travel related medications. After all, not getting malaria helps the traveler and the insurance provider.

Global Alert! Preferred
We filed a claim when my husband took ill while we were on vacation in South Africa. TripMate, the insurance company behind Global Alert, took a very long time to process our claim after we returned home and filed the claim. Additionally, TripMate told us the medical coverage was secondary to our health insurance when that was not the case; TripMate should have paid the hospital directly, which they did not, so we had to pay out of pocket and then recover the hospital and medical expenses. We have finally received full payment for the claim but that happened only after the folks at InsureMyTrip got involved. The Customer Care department of InsureMyTrip is wonderful and they contacted TripMate on our behalf until the claim was finally paid. If you have a problem with any policy sold by InsureMyTrip, they will stand behind it! To summarize - I do not recommend TripMate or Global Alert insurance based on our experience but I definitely do recommend InsureMyTrip.

    We are pleased to learn that your claim has been paid. Thank you for allowing InsureMyTrip to advocate on your behalf and assist you in getting your claim resolved. We apologize on behalf of the claims administrator for the lengthy claims process and confusion over whether the medical coverage is primary or secondary. In general, the medical expense benefit provided on comprehensive travel insurance plans is in excess of your primary health insurance.

    "If at the time of the occurrence of any Loss there is other valid and collectible insurance or indemnity in place, We shall be liable only for the excess of the amount of Loss, over the amount of such other insurance or indemnity, and applicable deductible."
