We had filed a claim for a flight out of Washington to Norway which was delayed. The process was very detailed with a lot of uploading paper work to show that we purchased another connecting flight in order to make our cruise time. Nationwide did make good on the claim for $200. (which was in the policy for the delay). With that being said the policy was good to have if something major was to take place.

Luckily didn’t need to use this, however there was a point in the trip where we had a situation that could have potentially caused cancellations. I was glad to have this in my “back pocket “. Will use again in future.

I was pleased to find this travel insurance available. It was a stretch to pay for but reasonable since we had arranged an airbnb for part of the trip. At our octogenarian ages it seemed necessary. Eight weeks prior to our trip I was thrown from my bicycle and sustained a broken elbow. Emergency surgery and the countdown to departure for the next bicycle tour began and the relief I felt at knowing that we had insurance should I not be able to participate was every bit worth the cost of the insurance. I did, in fact, participate in that following tour and was grateful I was healing as fast as I did. Not everyone might have been as fortunate.

Purchased a plan on 3/5/2020 for a dream trip to Norway. We put together an itinerary including Flights to UK, cruise to Norway from Southhampton and then Cruise to New York on Queen Mary 2. Today was the date on which we had to make the final payment on the cruises. Since the cruise was not until August We thought we might be able to rely on the travel insurance in case one of the cruise lines or the airline cancelled part of the trip. Just to be sure, I called Nationwide customer service to make sure we would be covered. Imagine my surprise to find out that if any of the cancellations were due to coronavirus it would not be covered because it was not a listed peril on the policy. The customer service representative explained that unless the reason for trip cancellation or delay was due to a listed peril in the policy then it was not covered.

An example: The policy states "The company will reimburse you if your miss your connection due to inclement weather" they will reimburse you for expenses and pre-paid nonrefundable trip payments fr the unused portion of your trip. However if the flight is cancelled due to mechanical problems you are up the creek, because that is not a listed peril.

So this is not really insurance, it is a guessing game to see if your crystal ball works well enough to figure out what could possibly go wrong months in advance of your trip and then find a policy from some company that covers all of the stuff you came up with. Good luck with that.

Basically unless you are injured or fall ill or heaven forbid die, due to an unforeseen incident and not related to any of the page full of exclusions, you are covered. If your flight is delayed or canceled due to weather you are covered. Anything else - tough luck.

So it looks like we will get a cruise credit for the cruise portion of the trip and the airlines are also offering free changes for most flights. Nationwide has "voucher program" which MAY offer partial credit to transfer some or all of the cost of your unused travel policy to a future trip. I must say I'm not expecting much after speaking to their "customer service" people.

I'm sure glad automobile and life insurance is better than travel insurance. I think it should be called something else.

Reading the plan at home, we needed better knowledge about whether the plan offered complete return of money if the trip had been cancelled in the beginning or close to the end. MAKE THE POLICY MUCH CLEARER AS TO THE MONEY RETURNED IF TRIP CANCELLED OR CANCELLED NIN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRIP

Luckily, did not have to use this policy, but glad I had it! Came close to having to cancel trip due to health issues, so was glad that I purchased.

I had to cancel my travel plans due to an injury. My claim was handled professionally and very quickly. I would highly recommend both the company and the plan.

Luckily all went well and I didn't need to make a claim, but I was glad to find this option that covered cruise-specific problems such as missed ports in addition to normal travel insurance inclusions.

Claim was processed successfully but very slowly (3 months from filing to check). Cancellation resulted from traveling family member's unexpected surgery. Claim form (from claims processor in Florida subcontracted by Nationwide) asked for rights to access her complete medical records over an extended period. Instead, she provided a formal letter from her surgeon. Since the amount claimed was little more than $100 over the cost of the policy premium, she/I felt this demand to access huge amounts of confidential health information was way out of line. Buyer beware; in processing claims, claim processors may automatically ask for intrusive access to someone else's health records. If you (or they) are not willing to provide this, try pushing back but realize that you may ultimately be forced to either forego your claim or reveal medical information belonging to whichever party "caused" the claim. These days privacy has a real value and claims processors should adapt by asking only for what can be reasonably required to fairly process the claim in front of them. In this instance, Nationwide's claims processor acted reasonably; they did not press for anything more than the surgeon's letter and did not reject the claim automatically because I didn't sign anything granting them permission to go where they didn't need to go.
