The travel company cancelled my trip and I rebooked for 2023. The airfare was separate so I tried to get that amount back from the insurance company. It wasn't covered as this policy does not cover if a tour company cancels - apparently you must have the 'cancel for no reason' policy. Obviously will keep that in mind for next time. The airline did give me a credit so it worked out but I was lucky.

I’m happy to report that I had no claims to submit, and even happier that no claims were necessary. That’s what travel insurance is all about!!! If you need it, great! If you don’t, even better. Better safe than sorry is always good!!!

I did not find that the coverage is adequate for extreme sport. While you are hiking in remote areas, better coverage is needed.

Thank you for your comments. However, your Nationwide Essential policy doesn't consider hiking an extreme sport. In this policy, coverage is excluded for:
"12. participating in bodily contact sports; skydiving; hang-gliding; parachuting; mountaineering; any race; bungee cord jumping; and speed contest (speed contest shall not include any of the regatta races;) scuba diving; spelunking or caving; heliskiing; extreme skiing..."

Luckily we didn't need to use but we are surely glad we took out the insurance. People who joined our tour from other parts of the U.S. dealt with adverse weather conditions. Would not travel anymore on a large trip without insurance. Kind of like homeowner's insurance -- nice to have but hope you never need to use.

Nationwide is definitely not on your side! I purchased this plan for my wife's trip to Peru. Her suitcases were stolen from a bus by a team that opened the hold while the bus was rolling. The policy provided for $2000 lost luggage, about half the value of what was lost, so we filed a claim.
Nationwide did everything possible not to pay, in order by:
1. Claiming the vehicle was unattended at the time of theft thus ineligible for coverage (note, the bus was full, and moving at the time).
2. Demanding that we provide evidence of insurance coverage held by the Peruvian bus company.
3. Demanding that we file a claim with them.
4. Demanding that we await the outcome of the claim with the Peruvian bus company, even though we'd already provided evidence of the maximum they would pay out in the event the Peruvian bus company approved our claim (their maximum was ~$120).
After I threatened to go to the Insurance Commissioners of both of their home state of Florida and my home state of California, they relented and approved the claim, 3 months later, for the coverage amount, minus the $120 that the Peruvian bus company promised but that we will never see of course.
InsureMyTrip was very helpful in providing an advocate that also helped convince Nationwide to pay this claim in good faith. I will never buy another policy from Nationwide, but I am grateful for the help InsureMyTrip provided in pursuing this claim.
