Question:

My father-in-law has health problems that may or may not escalate. We had already paid the deposit for a trip in October. Would a policy with Trip Cancellation cover if we need to cancel to take care of him?
Emily,

Answer:

The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen sickness, accidental injury or death to you, a traveling companion or an immediate family member. To see all of the covered reasons to cancel or interrupt your trip, please click on the dollar amount that appears NEXT to the words "Trip Cancellation" when viewing a quote. Please note that policies have exclusions for preexisiting medical conditions, and the best way to find out if you will be covered is to call us and speak with a customer care representative.

Question:

We have sent in our passports for renewal, and do not expect any problems getting them back in time since it's 4 months until our trip. However, we also need them to apply for our visas. Would failure to receive these documents be covered by comprehensive? What about CFAR>
MaryH,

Answer:

Failure to receive the passports would not be covered under regular trip cancellation, but the CFAR benefit would account for this up until two days before the departure date, yes.

Question:

I had to pay upfront one half of my winter rental in Florida. 4,000.00 if I have to cancel this reservation will the insurance cover the deposit?
Nancy,
04/27/2014

Answer:

Travel insurance covers Trip Cancellation due to covered reasons. The number one reason for cancellation is the unforeseen illness, accidental injury or death to you, a traveling companion or a non traveling family member. In addition to these reasons, most plans will also cover being called to Jury Duty or being subpoenaed to court, or if you are layed off from you employment (of 1-3 consecutive years depending on the policy). Cancellation will reimburse your pre-paid and non refundable trip costs, including the non refundable rental deposit.

Question:

I just started chemotherapy. I would like to attend a family event in three months but am not sure if I will feel well enough to make the trip. Can I book my airline ticket now and get insurance in case I have to cancel? Thank you.
Julia,
04/27/2014

Answer:

Unfortunately, since you are not medically fit to travel today, you would not be eligible for travel insurance. In addition, since there is a chance that you will not be well enough to travel in 3 months, cancellation is foreseen and would not be covered. However, we do have policies which have an option to add Cancel For Any Reason. To be eligible for this type of policy you must insure 100% of all pre-paid and non refundable trip costs, purchase the insurance within 10-21 days (depending on the policy) of the initial trip deposit, you cannot cancel the day of the trip or the day before, cancellation must be more than 2 days prior to your departure date, and you must be medically fit to travel on the day you purchase the insurance.

Answer:

Cancellation is for specific listed reasons. Not obtaining your visa ahead of time, or in a timely manner is not a reason for cancellation under any policy. The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen sickness, accidental injury or death to you, a travelling companion or an immediate family member. Answer:

The Comprehensive Package Plans are the only plans we offer that include Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits. Unfortunately, we do not offer these benefits without the medical included.

I am an airline pilot and I fly standby, aka space available. Are there any types of coverages that will refund my prepaid accommodations expenses, if I am not able to get on a flight due to space. Thanks
MichaelR,

Answer:

Unfortunately, no, because you do not have a scheduled flight and are flying standby, possible delays and cancellations are foreseen and would not be covered.

Question:

My mother in law is 81 an scared to death to fly, my father in law is being honored in Europe as a veteran, what is at the last minute she will not go after I have purchased her ticket, can she be reimbursed.
PatL,
12/22/2013

Answer:

Unfortunately, your concern is not a covered reason for cancellation under any policy. The only way to have some coverage would be to buy a plan that has a Cancel For Any Reason rider. Cancel for any reason would allow her to "change her mind" as you have described and receive a partial reimbursement under the insurance policy. There are 3 conditions that MUST be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider, as follows: Purchase the policy within 14-30 days of Initial Trip Payment (policy specific); Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip must be canceled more than 2 days prior to departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you 75% of your trip costs, unless otherwise noted. The Cancel For Any Reason will show under its own box. Please make sure to click on the underlined phrase to view the requirements to qualify for this option. If you decide to buy this Rider, make sure to click on the box near Cancel For Any Reason and hit the 'buy' button at the top or bottom of the quote. Please note that these policies are State-specific.
