Planning a Fall or Winter Road Trip in the U.S.

Each of the following road trips outlined below includes our suggestions for the "Best Time to Go." Using this information, travelers can plan their trip for the optimal season and experience each location in all its glory. While many of these trips are recommended for spring and summer, some are also great options for fall and winter. For example, Hana Highway in Hawaii and Florida's Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys could be ideal routes for autumn or holiday road trips. If you're interested in "leaf-peeping" to view stunning fall foliage, we recommend the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire and Route 6 in Massachusetts during September and October.

Even more adventurous road trippers can embrace the cold and plan a winter trek. The Olympic Peninsula Loop in Washington is open during the winter months and offers stunning views when blanketed in fresh white snow. The same can be said for Scenic Byway 12 in Utah. There is nothing quite like snowcapped red rocks! Travelers may also consider adding some other winter activities, like skiing or snowmobiling, into their trip. Utah and Washington both offer plenty of options for winter sports that are not far from the outlined road trip route.

As with any road trip, it's important to plan ahead. In some cases, popular routes like Trail Ridge Road in Colorado are closed during the winter months. Travelers will also want to make sure their vehicles are prepared to handle harsh weather and road conditions, and that additional supplies are packed. This is especially important when traveling long stretches of roadway where the weather could deteriorate without many options to restock. Additionally, road trippers must take into account any travel restrictions imposed by states due to the pandemic before hitting the road.

Trail Ridge Road carves through the Rockies in Colorado and serves as the main route in Rocky Mountain National Park. In fact, it is the only continually paved road in the U.S. at such a high elevation (over 12,000 feet). Because Trail Ridge Road takes road trippers so high up, the views are unlike anywhere else. Wildlife is plentiful too, so bighorn sheep, elk, and moose can be spotted in the distance right from the car. Most travelers start their journey in Estes Park, which is a mountainside tourist town with excellent shopping, restaurants, and fun for the kids. Estes Park is also home to the Stanley Hotel, which famously served as the inspiration for Steven King's The Shining. Our advice is to pack some warm clothing in the car even if it's a beautiful day in Estes Park because once you get to the top, the tundra can be 30 or more degrees colder.

The unique landscape is made up of sandhills, which are grass-covered sand dunes. These sandhills are home to migratory birds, most notably the Sandhill Crane, as well as many other Great Plains animals. As a result, this road trip route is a favorite among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The wide-open spaces let you see for miles, which is especially great at night for stargazing.
