The John Hancock Silver plan is the mid-level policy offered by John Hancock Insurance Agency. It may be ideal for families traveling with children, as kids 18 and under are covered at no additional cost as long as one parent is covered under the plan.

Coverage is offered if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for a typical covered reason which can range from an unforeseen illness, injury or death, to your destination being made uninhabitable by a natural disaster (please see your quoted plan for a full list of covered perils).

The John Hancock Silver plan does offer higher limits of coverage than the Bronze plan for baggage protection, travel delay, medical and emergency medical evacuation. The plan offers the ability to choose the medical limit to allow you to feel more comfortable with your level of coverage while traveling.

If you are concerned about a pre-existing condition causing you to make a claim, this plan offers a pre-existing conditions waiver. You must purchase the plan within 14 days of the initial trip payment and meet all other eligibility requirements to qualify for the waiver.

This plan also includes accidental death coverages as well as an option to add rental car collision coverage. The plan also offers an adventure sport option that would extend medical coverage to a list of sports such as bungee cord jumping, helicopter skiing, spelunking or caving.

I actually bought this plan for two different trips. The first time I bought it we had to cancel our trip at the last minute due to my husband getting unexpectedly sick. I called in, spoke to a live person, got the claim form, and started cancelling all our plans. The claim form had to have a short section completed by the doctor and the rest I filled out. While the form did require a significant amount of paperwork (pulling original reservation receipts, credit card receipts, cancellation emails, etc.) and took me probably a good 3-5 hours to complete (and I am a fairly organized traveler with all of this stuff handy - but it was a two week trip with multiple vendors organized over several months so had lots of documents to locate), I could not have been happier with the end result. 100% reimbursement of my claims, no issues whatsoever. I received a check in the mail a few weeks after submitting my form. They covered my nonrefundable fares, change fees for the airlines, hotel deposits, etc. I was extremely happy with the coverage and would definitely buy this coverage again having had the worst happen and come through relatively unscathed. The insurance more than paid for itself as I was not out of pocket anything for the missed trip other than the cost of the insurance itself.
