Have purchased trip insurance for YEARS (though only ONCE filed a minor claim). We buy insurance mainly as a precaution to cancellation of travel plans at start or halfway thru trips because of any possible emergencies occurring to elderly family members at home. That and when overseas having adequate medical insurance for ourselves. As we grow older trip insurance applies mostly to ourselves.

Luckily I didn't have to file any claims because nothing bad happened during my 6 months stay in Canada, but I felt safe because I knew that I was covered in any case. I would get this (or something similar) insurance in the future again.

My husband is disabled and we traveled with a CNA employed through an agency. During the trip I became acutely and seriously ill. The CNA needed to care for both of us from then on. Travelex wouldn't cover the cost of her services for me because she was a "traveling companion." My illness caused an extra day's stay, an ER visit, and changes in transfers. All these were covered. The only available flight home was in first class which turned out to be a medical necessity as I needed to constantly recharge a medical device. Travelex wouldn't cover that cost because I had not contacted their doctor. Had the summary of coverage spelled out that their doctor had to be contacted to approve flying first, it would have been done. This requirement is in the fine print of the policy, according to the adjuster under the heading " Emergency Medical Evacuation." As a retired physician I see Emergency Medical Evacuation as needing a helicopter to get me out of the Amazon before my appendix bursts.

    Thank you for your feedback on the policy. We hope that fellow customers will find your review and our response to be educational and informative.

    We are sorry to learn of the illness that you suffered during your trip. Unfortunately, there are no travel insurance policies that will cover the costs of services provided by a CNA that you are traveling with.

    Your travel insurance provider, Travelex, responded with the following:
    "Thank you for taking the time to post about your experience on InsureMyTrip.com

    We have contacted the Claim Administrator, on your behalf, and we are happy to hear that you were eligible and reimbursed for the Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, and Medical Expenses, that you incurred while on your trip.

    It is important to remember that insurance is highly regulated, and all claims are determined based on the documentation submitted in relation to the policy that was purchased. The policy details were sent to you on February 14, 2019 at 2:50 pm when the policy was purchased.

    On page 5 of the policy details there is an explanation related to Trip Interruption, which states;

    … the benefit payable … will not exceed the cost of economy airfare or the same class as the Insured’s original ticket, less any refunds paid or payable, by the most direct route. (emphasis added)

    On page 7 under the Medical Expense Benefit, the policy details outline the below;

    The Company will reimburse You for Medically Necessary covered expenses incurred to treat such Injury or Sickness during the course of the Trip provided the initial documented treatment was received from a Physician during the Trip.

    Medically Necessary in the policy is, additionally, defined as a treatment, service, or supply that is ordered by a Physician.

    That being said, the Claim Administrator would be happy to re-review your claim, if you have additional documentation that supports first class airfare was medically necessary and ordered by a Physician during your trip. They can be reached by phone at 1-855-205-6054, Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 7:00pm CST.

    Kind Regards,

    Amber"

basis for claim was within coverage time. Solution fell outside the original time frame. The adjustor and I had different interpretations about the flexibility of the policy. She won, I did not push.

    Thank you for your feedback. However, it is true that not only must the claim have occurred during the policy term, the additional expense must also be incurred during that coverage term. A good example is a traveler waiting until returning home before seeking medical treatment for an injury that occurred during the trip. There would be no reimbursement under a travel insurance policy for medical expenses incurred once you returned home.

      Sorry for the delayed response. This is what I thought: I had a normal policy. Coverage for cancellation, for covered causes, began at time of purchase. The original trip included a visit of my daughter. Her newly scheduled operation, just a few days before the starting date of my travel, required that I depart earlier than scheduled and return later (the total trip duration was 30 days).

      By the time United Airlines adjusted my schedule I had to purchase the outgoing flight and use my already invested miles for the return flight.

      In the pre-departure hurry I did not call you; I thought the event was covered and notification after arrival to Toronto would not affect our relations. The changes and costs were all before the original termination date of the policy; I had no claim for thet period.

      I think the problem is that travel insurance policies/adjustors do not consider when the the cause of a claim is within the coverage period, but the resulting costs are incurred outside the orginal travel dates. I don't know how normal coverage can deal with situation; a little extra good will might have helped.

      I had no time to think this through and took your agen's word. Under calmer conditions I probably would have engaged in a more substantive debate.

      This is how I see it now. The technicality of "late reporting" could have been overlooked and the claim handled with a more open mind. What if I'd had the presence of mind to call you before I made the flight changes? It would have not altered any of the relevant facts.

      That's it. What do you think?

    I'm very sorry for the delay in replying to your question. Travel insurance policies are very specific and determine payment based on the plans terms and conditions.

      That's OK. I'm late, too. In any case, this was a closed case with the insurance company, inasmuch as I elected not to pursue the matter. Since the situation is not likely (I hope) to happen again, I won't pursue it as an academic matter. You are right, even the best-looking policy needs to be scrutinized before finalk acceptance. What happened is simply not something antoicipated by the creators of the text, the agents could not lean towards the "benefit the customer" direction. Soo . . Have a nice holiday season.

I can't give top marks as I didn't file a claim, and therefore (luckily) can't speak for all features of the plan; however, it provided reasonable coverage at a fair price

Purchased plan to be reimbursed for cruise ports if missed. Plan did not cover this and was I not given the proper information before purchasing the policy that this was not covered. Very disappointed. Will purchase future policy with another company that has covered this in the past.

    Thank you for your feedback. You did purchase the Nationwide Essentials policy which does not cover missed ports. However, coverage for missed ports would have been provided under one of the Nationwide Cruise plans.
