The insuremytrip website was very useful in finding the best plan to suit my needs. I selected the benefits that were important to me to filter the available plans and then picked the one with the lowest price that had decent reviews. We had to cancel our trip due to my wife's illness. The claims process was clear and straight-forward. The Confirmation of Coverage included a link to file a claim. I filled out the web page, which generated an email to me with the claims form attached, as well as clear instructions and a 6-item checklist of items they needed. I had the choice of emailing the documents, uploading them, or mailing them. I chose email. When I emailed the final document on the list (which needed to filled out and signed by a doctor, so it took a week or so), I asked them to keep me apprised of the status of my claim. I didn't hear anything other than an automated response saying they had received my email, so after 5 days I called. It didn't take too long to get through to a live person. They told me it can take up to 15 days to process the claim. Three days later (8 days after I emailed the last document), I received an email saying the claim was approved and payment would be by EFT to my bank. Within a few days, I received notice from my bank that the deposit had been made. I'm quite happy with the whole experience.

Obtaining the policy was very easy. I thankfully didn't need to file a claim, and since that's where the rubber meets the road, I can't evaluate the claims process. One thing I couldn't easily find was a policy where you could pick and choose the benefits. For example, my health insurance covers medical expenses outside of the country, and I didn't want to pay for additional coverage that I wouldn't need. But I didn't see policies that provided that option.

We searched the cheapest travel insurance, covering the possible needs, in case of a claim. This is what we purchased. Lucky for us we did not have to make/process a claim during our travels (no one expects to) so there is less to review, only the insurance cost.

The process of selecting insurance was very simple, but I did have a few questions. The customer service people were very helpful in explaining differences between the plans. Of course I wish it cost less! But it is nice to know you are insured when you're leaving for a long vacation.

My primary goal was to be sure that If I needed to be evacuated that I had a policy for that possibility. It appears that each coverage wants to be sure that a previous coverage does not cover, in this case, evacuation. I learned from Humana that I must spend my dollars first, return to the US and then file for reimbursement.
I'm not sure how your carrier would have performed in this instance, but I felt good about having the extra protection.
