A last minute, complex trip was covered and, thankfully, we had no need to use it. But missed connections and mishaps along the way made it evident to me that trip insurance is necessary and sensible.

I learned during this trip's insurance purpose that these plans are less useful for the non-medical aspects of a trip. It became clear to me that these plans are targeted more to folks that pay all costs and have no option of receiving a refund ONLY as of the day prior to your trip's departure.

For example, on our most recent 23 day trip one of our B&Bs would not give refunds after we were only four days into our trip and most other B&Bs would not give refunds only a few days prior to our first night's stay. According the person we spoke to at Insuremytrip there were no CSA or other companys' policies that would cover that situation since it was still refundable as of the day we left for our trip. So if we would have had to return home suddenly after five days into our trip, we would have lost the money for the B&B that needed 3 weeks notice for a full refund. In addition if both of us on this policy would have been incapacitated and unable to cancel all the other B&Bs that had better refund policies (say 2 or 3 days before our stay at them), we would still have to pay those B&Bs.

SO BE FOREWARNED: CSA and other companies will NOT pay unless it was prepaid and non-refundable the day before leaving on your trip. Perhaps the chances of this happening are low but it makes it more difficult to determine the amount of insurance to purchase...I had to file an amendment several times as I further planned the B+Bs for our trip. The travel part of the insurance seems to cater to the fully up front funded vacation via a third party. Wouldn't they have formulas to determine that risk an just fully cover all costs if something should happen during the trip?

That said the medical part of the policy is worth it. We didn't use it during this trip but we had to during a previous trip and were very satisfied.

I was trying to buy premises coverage for a vacation rental apartment, but the site gave me trip insurance instead, and then told me my request for the premises coverage could not go through.

    On our site, we recommend the top rated Travel Insurance compies who provide trip protection, emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage. CSA is one of our providers who supply this coverage to us. It is possible that CSA provides Liability coverage for rentals, however since our site is not geared towards this type of coverage, you would have to purchase this directly with CSA.
