First, I choose a plan on the most catastrophic risk: having to be medically transported home. I called one of the companies that provides air ambulance service to ask what a typical trans-Atlantic transport would cost. Secondarily, I looked at some of the more likely losses such as reimbursement for trip delay, baggage loss and baggage delay.

We bought the insurance for peace of mind in case the worst occurred. A fellow traveler tripped and broke his wrist. Israel's healthcare took care of him efficiently, but there were difficult questions about payment before leaving the country. Would having insurance help them in this case? Anyway, we bought insurance with the hope we never need it and we never did need it. InsureMyTrip served that purpose.

    Thank you for your question. If you should ever find yourself in need of medical assistance during your trip, you should call the 24 Hour Emergency Assistance Center for help. Foreign medical facilities can sometimes require payment (guarantee of payment) to admit, treat, or release a patient. Most travel insurance companies employ assistance companies that can advance medical payment to a hospital if necessary. Some travel insurance companies write in their policies that they have the capability of advancing medical payment or making a guarantee of payment to secure an insured's admission to a hospital.

We were grateful for the peace of mind it provided on a recent trip to Costa Rica during which a volcano erupted and closed the airport for several days. One of our pre-paid domestic flights was cancelled because of the wind-borne ash. Fortunately, the airport did reopen in time for our flight back home.

Thankfully, we didn't have any claims, so we can't really comment on how the plan would have responded. Money was well spent, however, for peace of mind. This applies to most all insurance policies. You pay for the policy and hope you never have to make a claim.

For the extent of coverage sought and amount of premium paid, it was quite reasonable. Having been on an island 3+ hours from Honolulu, with only one commercial flight per week, the telling situation of this policy's value would be if I needed to use the medical evacuation coverage.

They promptly handled a claim for a missed hotel reservation due to a delayed flight. My complaint is that we were held over in London returning, and had to buy some things for the stay overnight, as our checked luggage was not available. InsureAssist would not cover that claim since it was on a return flight home, and we already had one delayed flight claim, and they did not cover two.

It is industry standard that the baggage delay benefit is for outbound flights only. In addition, travel delay coverage is typically provided on a one-time basis per trip.
