Allianz Global Assistance Basic
Two weeks before a trip to Thailand my wife sprained her knee, necessitating a trip cancellation. Per the guidelines from Allianz, I filed a claim totaling 21 pages. After 10 days, I called for a status report and was told the claim had been received, complimented for its accuracy and told it was being reviewed. The claim was paid in full in a little over 11 weeks. The reason it took so long was because Allianz ask for additional documentation which wasn't in the original guidelines regarding proof of payment or proof of non-refundable payments. Recommendation to policy holders: Along with proof from your travel company or carrier for payment include a copy of a cancelled check, bank statement or credit card statement. We were also asked to provide a letter from our Visa processing company stating that the payment for our visas was non-refundable. Providing cancelled checks or letters verifying non-refundable payments was not included in the claim filing guidelines. If they had been, we probably could have completed our claim in less than 5 or 6 weeks. By being patient, we were able to complete our claim and get 100% of what we asked for. We have since bought another Allianz policy for an upcoming trip and would recommend them to everyone.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Prime
This is the first time I ever purchased travel insurance (despite having traveled internationally for the past several years.) It was a very expensive trip to Asia and my husband and I were most interested in the medical coverage (didn't want to be stuck overseas with an illness/injury requiring expensive medical costs.) Well, I ended up getting food poisoning and spent a day on IV fluids and IV antibiotics, racking up $1000 in medical costs. I called Nationwide from the clinic in Thailand (I had their app on my phone with all of the insurance info at my fingertips) and they immediately opened a claim for me and gave me a claim number. They also emailed me all the forms that I needed to complete with a list of everything that I needed to supply for the claim. Meanwhile, our flight from Incheon to LA was delayed, causing us to miss our connecting flight to Denver. My husband had to purchase 2 seats on another airline last minute for $500. I submitted a claim for $1500 on 12/26/17 for medical expenses and trip interruption. I immediately received a confirmation email and had a check issued to me for the full amount of my claim on 1/03/18. There was no hassle whatsoever. I was so impressed with their service that I just purchased another policy for our trip to Europe in September. I cannot stress how happy I am with this company and how efficiently they handled my claim. I realize how lucky my husband and I have been over the years to not have had any illness or trip interruption befall us, but I realize the importance of having travel protection (especially being medically covered while out of the country) and will never go without travel insurance again. And, of course, I will be going with Nationwide.

GeoBlue Trekker Essential
I can’t really rate the plan since, thankfully, I never had to file a claim. Therefore I have no basis recommend it at this time.

The cost does seem reasonable if the coverage and hoops you have to go through are as suggested in their literature.

It is somewhat more tricky to sign up for this plan than the others, and my password did not work when I tried to contact them overseas. They did help me by email to establish another password. But since their office is closed on weekends, it took awhile.

Allianz Global Assistance Classic
Did not need the features of the plan, fortunately, so I don’t know how the claim process would work.
Since I was in Thailand thought it would be good just in case.

Travelex Travel Select
Travelex was a total waste of money for us. Our airline changed time of connecting flight which we purchased as one reservation and one booking number (not even notifying us). We were told about it when we came to the airport. We missed connecting flight and had to buy airline ticket on different airline at the Bangkok airport to continue our trip. It wasn't out fault at all. It wasn't refunded by Travelex.

The Description of Coverage was emailed to you on October 30, 2017 at 7:57pm, when the policy was purchased.

      If the airline did not provide you with notice that your flight schedule had been changed, or the change made it impossible for you to make the connecting flight, we recommend contacting the airline, by emailing the airline’s claim department, to request reimbursement for the out of pocket expenses you incurred as a result of the change.

      We empathize with your unfortunate situation; however, we trust that you understand that based on the terms and conditions of the protection plan purchased, and the information you presented, the reason for your request for reimbursement is not covered."

April Travel Protection Choice
We didn't have to use it (Thank Goodness) but I did feel much better having it - and we saw that the April Travel plan was accepted broadly all over Asia! Call the customer support line and have them hep you choose a plan based on what activities you'll be participating in. Get peace of mind - it's worth it!

Generali Global Assistance Standard
We purchased this plan to cover our 2-week tour of SE Asia. Since the tour was prepaid, the insurance provided some peace of mind in case we needed to cancel the trip due to illness. It also provided other comprehensive benefits like trip delay and medical evacuation which again, provided peace of mind since we were traveling to small cities in SE Asia.
