Comprehensive plans offer the most benefits, including Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption. These plans provide the best protection for the investment you have made in your trip.
For years, I've been using insuremytrip.com to help in planning to buy trip insurance. It's a great service. I had significant problems with the flights on my last international trip and filed a claim with Generali. I found Generali's web site clunky, yet I received my claim payment promptly.

The plan covered all the major items I was looking for, including cancel for any reason. I was traveling with a group of 6, so we all wanted to be able to cancel if anything significant happened since we booked a cruise many months before we actually were set to sail. Fortunately, we did not need to file a claim, but it was nice to have the coverage (as I've had to file a claim for a trip in the past). It would be nice if there was a printable travel card that had the important phone numbers and policy number. I think I had something like this once before. I just had to print full pages to carry around. Outside of that (which is just a nice to have), the insurance was nice to have just in case...

Thankfully, I did not need to file a claim. However, it was reassuring to know that should I have needed the coverage, it was there at a very reasonable cost.

We had purchased a policy through InsureMyTrip with Nationwide. A week before our cruise we experienced a family emergency that would prevent us from going on the cruise. I contacted the cruise line and airlines. They all let us rebook for a later time. I then contacted Nationwide, they told us they would not refund but would transfer the policy. We said that was acceptable and sent them the information they had requested. Two week later I had heard nothing so I contacted again. We were told they had not received our info. So I resent. That was the last I have heard from Nationwide.
Its not worth being upset about so we have moved on. But I do find it to be very interesting that the only "issue" we had with canceling was with the company we had purchased a policy from to prevent any "issues". We plan to continue purchasing policies through InsureMyTrip, but with some other carrier.

Had purchased this policy a few times for cruise and flight travel. Finally had to use it for a 9 hr. delayed flight from Allegiant in which the airline gave us only $8 for food. I kept all my food receipts, submitted them, a screenshot of them on my credit card statement, along with the flight purchase and two screenshots from two different sources of the delayed flight and new departure time. I submitted that all about 3 days after I returned. Waited about 3 weeks and sent an inquiry, heard nothing. Based on other reviews, I knew it could take up to three months. About 5 days ago I got an automated email that was claim was received, but that still being processed due to the amount of claims they were receiving. Today (1/5 months later), I got a check in the mail for my requested amount. I would use them again!
