A friend of mine was hospitalized on a cruise ship for one day and was billed $19,000. A medical occurrence can happen to anyone. It’s beyond foolish not to buy trip insurance. I’ve always been satisfied with InsureMyTrip policies. Signing up is easy and the prices are reasonable. It’s a peace of mind thing. I strongly recommend this company.

STAY AWAY FROM AXA INSURANCE. An insurance plan is only as good as the claim process, and my experience was terrible. My hotel reservation was cancelled 4 hours prior to arrival, due to the hotel booking firm going out of business. I called to ask whether my policy covered this as I was not sure if it did. The customer service person promised me a response in 2 hours, as he was also not sure, but none came. More than 24 hours later (during which time I had to scramble to rebook the hotel at a higher cost), I received an email saying I had filed a Trip Interruption claim (I had not - and it didn't seem that it would be covered under this section anyway) and asking for documentation they knew I wouldn't have. There was no explanation as to why they sent this and suggested I file under that. I emailed back to explain the situation as I assumed the phone rep had not understood or correctly communicated it, and question what the email was about but received no reply. I also received no further communications asking if I needed further assistance, or wished to proceed with my claim. All-in-all this was a very frustrating experience under stressful circumstances, I will not buy from AXA Assistance again.

I actually made use of the Travel Guard concierge service inasmuch as Lufthansa cancelled our flight back to the States about 24 hours before we were to take off. The alternative that Lufthansa offered had a long delay, and we had trouble arranging for alternative service, ultimately getting assistance from Travel Guard in confirming seating on a UA flight so we would arrive back in Seattle only a bit over 5 hours late. The TG concierge was better than working with Travelocity concierge, and way better than working with any airline, at least in the middle of the night.

We never needed to use our plan, however, there were circumstances that occurred during our 10 day trip that made us feel more secure because of buying it. First, there were weather problems predicted with our connection that could have caused problems in making our cruise; next there were protests in the city where our cruise started; and finally, there was a last minute strike on the airline on which we were flying home. If any of these situations had become a reality, we felt sure we had a "back-up" plan when we were thousands of miles away from home and not able to speak the language of the country in which we were traveling. The peace of mind was worth cost for us.

We were fortunate that our trip went as smoothly as could possibly be expected, and we did not have to utilize the plan we purchased. That said, it gave us peace of mind we wouldn't have had otherwise, which was worth a lot, given our financial (and emotional) investment in the trip we planned.

We had no issues on the trip so I can’t give a higher rating answer as to how satisfied I was with the plan because no claims were filed. I do recommend trip insurance for the unexpected. One of the couples with us while we were checking into our hotel in Barcelona had a large luggage suitcase stolen from the lobby at the check in desk because there were many people checking in and they took their eyes off their luggage for a few precious moments. They had purchased trip insurance.

I took the insurance as I wanted to be safe in case needed. It appeared to a a reasonable plan, comparing to others offered. Happily, no claims were filed. But it is difficult to assess whether or not this company serves its customers' needs well. It would be apparent if a claim had to be filed, but otherwise, how can you really judge.
