Our doctor's office made a mistake on the original claim submission, so we received partial payment. His response made it look like we had not cancelled the trip immediately upon getting medical advice to do so. When the doctor's office corrected their information, the balance of the payment was received.
The submission took place during a time of high claim activity (fires in California) so payment was a little slow, however given the circumstances, the company did an excellent job, and we were pleased with the outcome.

With the epidemic outbreak of the flu nationwide, I was very uncertain that we would even be able to take this vacation, if one or both of us became sick, but all was OK. It was reassuring with the trip insurance that it would not be a total loss if we had to cancel due to sickness.

The instructions on how to fill out section that determines the claim amount was lacking. I called the claims phone number to get some guidance. Due to the heavy accent of the person answering, I was unable to understand half of what was being said. Later I found out that I did not fill the section correctly, and I had to refile an amended claim.

Two weeks before a trip to Thailand my wife sprained her knee, necessitating a trip cancellation. Per the guidelines from Allianz, I filed a claim totaling 21 pages. After 10 days, I called for a status report and was told the claim had been received, complimented for its accuracy and told it was being reviewed. The claim was paid in full in a little over 11 weeks. The reason it took so long was because Allianz ask for additional documentation which wasn't in the original guidelines regarding proof of payment or proof of non-refundable payments. Recommendation to policy holders: Along with proof from your travel company or carrier for payment include a copy of a cancelled check, bank statement or credit card statement. We were also asked to provide a letter from our Visa processing company stating that the payment for our visas was non-refundable. Providing cancelled checks or letters verifying non-refundable payments was not included in the claim filing guidelines. If they had been, we probably could have completed our claim in less than 5 or 6 weeks. By being patient, we were able to complete our claim and get 100% of what we asked for. We have since bought another Allianz policy for an upcoming trip and would recommend them to everyone.

We were unable to reach a rep when the rental car company insisted we buy more insurance. It is not clear what part of the premium was for property damage, and liability (which the Mexican government won't accept from a 2rd party).

    Thank you for your feedback on the policy. The Allianz Global Assistance Basic plan has the option to add on 40,000USD in Rental Car Collision, which you selected for your trip. With any plan on our site that has Rental Car Collision, you would not have coverage for liability or damage to another car. You can find the following information in the certificate for this policy regarding Rental Car Collision:

    "A car you’re renting is stolen or is damaged in an accident or while it’s
    left unattended.
    Specific requirements
    • The driver is listed on the rental car agreement.
    • You file a report with the rental car company, either within 24 hours
    of the loss or damage or when you return the rental car (whichever
    comes first).
    What it covers:
    Repair or replacement
    The cost to repair or replace the car (whichever is less)
    • repair costs include only reasonable and customary costs to
    repair physical damage to the car and reasonable loss of use fees
    the rental car company charges while it’s being repaired
    • replacement cost is the car’s current market value"
