I always wonder why I must buy trip insurance the minute we put a deposit on the trip? In most cases the deposit is refundable until a specific date. Why can't trip insurers require the purchase of trip insurance when there is a real risk?

We appreciate your review of the AXA Assistance USA Gold plan. Actually you can purchase any of the Comprehensive plans up to the day before you depart on your trip. However, most plans do offer some time-sensitive benefits that will only be included in the policy if purchased within 10-30 days (depending on the plan) of your initial trip payment.
The time-sensitive benefits offered by many companies include the Pre-Existing Condition Waiver which waives the 60 to 180 day (depending on plan) Lookback Periods included in these plans. The Lookback Period is the amount of time an insurance company may look back into your medical history to see if your medical condition, that is the reason for the claim, received treatment or a recommendation for treatment. If that condition proves to be a Pre-Existing Medical Condition, then you would not have coverage unless you had the waiver.
Some other time sensitive benefits include, but are not limited to, Cancel for Any Reason, Financial Default, and Cancel for Work Reasons. These time-sensitive benefits all put the insurance company at a higher risk for loss.
We did not have to use the plan, and I guess that is a good thing. So, we cannot comment about how the coverage would have worked. Your cost was lower than what the travel company offered.
