We did not use our trip insurance. But, since we travel during hurricane season, it was nice peace of mind knowing that if anything were to happen we would be covered. A couple of hurricanes threatened our cruise but ended up not impacting it much (other than rerouting of one port). Also, at one point one of our party thought they might need medical attention, it was great comfort knowing that we were covered should that have occurred.

We were unable to take our family trip to Mexico as my daughter-in-law became pregnant and was unable to go because of the Zeka virus and other issues. We found this out in April and notified the company well before the trip in July. We were able to get part of our money back from our rental and had not booked airfare. I filed for the $400 that were still lost. I provided all the paperwork requested, however, my daughter-in-law's doctor elected to write a letter and offer his phone number, rather than fill out the insurance companies form. Despite this fact, the insurance company will not refund the money because the doctor has not filled out their form, a factor not within our control and not uncommon.

I bought Travel Insured International Worldwide Trip Protector Plus insurance for 4 trips, 2 of which I had to cancel. Note that WWTPP has "Cancel for any Reason" coverage, whereas many other plans do not. Anyway, the claims process was reasonable and the paperwork was not excessive. In both cases, I was very careful to follow the directions for the claims process exactly. In both cases, they requested a bit of extra info after the initial claim, and once I provided this, they paid without issues. I don't remember exactly how much time it took from filing the claim to getting the payment. It might have been 4-5 weeks total.
To make the claims process go smoothly:
- Keep all receipts and correspondence you get while booking the trip
- Claim any refunds due from hotels, charters. Keep receipts for refunds also. The trip insurance only pays un-refunded amounts.
- You will probably be required to cancel your airline tickets and include a letter stating that you do not plan to re-use them
- Follow the directions exactly
