Well, you hate to have to use insurance, but the "any reason" insurance made it easy to get reimbursed for my unplanned trip expenses. I highly recommend getting cancel for any reason policies.

Happy not to have a claim but I did have to file one a few years back, which went smoothly. It is really important to open the tabs and read more about the coverages-especially what is never covered when lost. I always use the 800 number and talk to a person- the agents are really knowledgeable about the products. They help make informed plan choices based on your trip (and don't just point you to the most expensive one). Remember to buy it soon after you arrange your trip to get the coverage, if you can, for pre-existing conditions.

The main reason for our trip (two different tours at the World War II Museum in New Orleans) were cancelled. Thought we were covered because we had purchased 'cancel for any reason' travel insurance. As soon as I found out about the second cancellation (granted, it was the day before we were supposed to leave), I contacted the company via the toll free number and was told that, even though we had 'cancel for any reason' insurance, we did NOT have a 'valid' reason to cancel and our non-refundable expenses (airfare & hotel purchase through airline site) were NOT going to be covered since it was less than 48 hours prior to departure. Asked to speak to a supervisor and asked if there were no provisions for 'last minute' events but she repeated that, if I would have read the details of the coverage (well, sure, that's on me because like most terms of agreement, nobody really READS them all the way through. I thought 'cancel for any reason' actually meant 'cancel for any reason'.), I would know that within 48 hours of departure, my reason was not going to be covered; the flight and the hotel were still available to me even though the reason for going was not anymore. Got an email from the company and voiced my complaint and opinion on the matter and, as of yet, almost a week later, no one has contacted me. Needless to say, I am not a fan.

We purchased the policy in Aug 2016 to cover a family vacation to Hilton Head with our adult children and grandchild planned for Aug 2017. We canceled the trip in January, because one of our daughters became pregnant with a due date in Aug 2017. Our only cost incurred prior to cancellation was a deposit the house we were renting.
Filing the claim was a straight forward process and the total amount of the deposit was paid.
I did have some questions and a claims rep (Brooke) was assigned to my claim. She was very helpful by explaining the required documentation and contacting the rental company.

Cancel for Any Reason only reimburses you if you cancel your trip up to 48 hours prior to your departure date for other than a covered reason. Since your request to cancel was within that 48 day period, there would be no coverage under the Cancel for Any Reason option.
