Fortunately we didn’t need to use the insurance. Other than a 12 hour flight delay on the way home (& Singaporeair put us up at a lovely Crowne Plaza hotel with dinner & breakfast), we had no serious injuries or illnesses. That’s what insurance is for.

I had a medical issue while overseas but didn’t want to visit a doctor in a 3rd world country. Since I waited until I was back in the US to get medical treatment I was not eligible to file a claim.

If you have an elderly parent in bad shape, you should purchase a plan with a "cancel for any reason" clause. My mother went into hospice care the day before I left for India. I talked to the International Medical Group iTravelInsured twice and was told I couldn't cancel because of that. She would have to die before I could cancel and be reimbursed for the trip. She died the day after I arrived in India.
If the average hospice stay is weeks, I can understand the policy of not allowing people to cancel for this reason, but I wish I had known that before I bought insurance.

I received a confusing email from IMG while I was away regarding extending the plan (or something ...I still don't know..)
and I wrote to them --but I didn't ever receive a reply! Terrible customer service. I'm abroad without access to regular internet nor a phone without paying a fortune, so they should be more sensitive to sending confusing emails and not responding to their customers..!

International Medical Group regularly sends out offers to extend policies within two weeks of the policy's expiration date. Although the company did not reply, we certainly hope that our email advising you that there was no reason for your reply unless you wished to extend your policy beyond the April 1, 2017 expiration date.

My 20 year old son was going to travel in Asia for six months, so we decided to buy a medical/evacuation policy just in case. At one point in his trip he became ill and spent three days in a hospital in Vietnam (FV Hospital--great care). Luckily, he got better, so no one needed to fly out to see him, and he did not need to be evacuated. The bill was about $1,800, which he paid in full with a credit card. We then submitted to bill to our regular health insurance company (the travel plan is secondary), which nicely paid all but $369. IMG them processed the rest of the claim, and paid it, less the $250 deductible. In the end, they paid $119, which is what the policy called for. We were just lucky that our health insurer covered this as well. The claims process was not the fastest (about 6 weeks), but is was accurate, and it was fair. They were very easy to work with, and provided everything they needed to.

The IMG iTravelInsured LX plan provides coverage up to 100,000 USD per person for unforeseen, accidental injuries or emergency illnesses which first occur during the trip, and are treated by a physician during the trip. If medical treatment is not obtained during the trip, and the traveler waits until returning home to the United States, the travel insurance expires and is not responsible for the medical bills.
