I was ill and could not go on my trip. When I contacted customer service the first time I did not feel the first agent was very friendly. I did contact them two other times and the agents a spoke to were much nicer. I submitted all requested info and claim was processed in about 21 days.

I had an accident in London. I called the 24 hour hot line and they told me to see a doctor, pay the bill, and submit for payment. Turned out the NHS did not charge me. But I was impressed by the response from the insurance representative.

I wanted to file a claim but gave up. The representative that I spoke with sounded like I woke her up or that she was bored. I even asked her if she was OK or if I should talk with someone else. The process for filing was so complicated that I gave up. The forms did not seem to pertain to my situation: I was injured while on my trip and went to the emergency room. I continued on with the trip so there was no cancellation or interruption of the trip.

The customer service at John Hancock Insurance was the worst I've experienced in over 20 years. While their office took information for a call back (twice) they never returned my calls. It took 3 days to reach an agent to ask questions about their policy and the agent was unwilling or unable to address my questions on the policy. After requesting to speak to a supervisor I was placed into a voicemail box and again no return call.

Fortunately, I was within the 10-day review period so was able to cancel the JH policy. I purchased a policy from April who provided exceptional customer service when I contacted them with the same questions regarding their Choice policy.

I highly recommend you check out policies offered by April vs. JH; April offers similar coverage (same underwriter as JH), are cost competitive, and April provides excellent customer service.

I found the John Hancock Insurance Agency very easy to deal with. There was a last minute change in travel dates and the Agency was very accommodating - no problem with them changing my coverage to the new dates. There has been no need to file a claim, so can't comment on how that would have been handled.
