It's great knowing you are covered in any event, and it will cost you less and cover you more than what the cruise company offers. A win-win in my opinion.

This isn't a review, but an elaboration on the first question.

I guess it's hard to say if the travel insurance I purchased provided "good coverage" since I (happily) didn't need to use it. But it seemed adequate for my needs when I read about it before purchasing it. And it gave me peace of mind to have it, so that makes it "good" to me. :-)

We never had to use the insurance, which is a good thing but it was nice knowing we were covered. I believe the price was right and the plan provided all of the phone numbers we may need in case of an emergency. Thanks

We LOVE Nationwide's cruise insurance plans. On this trip, we had a medical claim and an itinerary change claim for a missed port. Both were handled promptly and paid in full.

Due to bathrooms failure on the plane we were taking to Copenhagen we had to turn around and return to IAD after a couple of hours flying. Because of this we had to cancel our non refundable hotel stay but we purchased travel insurance so we thought not a problem. The rep from Nationwide was very nice but told us we had no claim, so we’re not happy customers.

    Thank you for your review.

    We are very sorry to hear that your claim with Nationwide Mutual was denied under Trip Interruption which is the benefit that offers travelers reimbursement of their pre-paid, non-refundable expenses should they unexpectedly need to cut their travel short. However, reimbursement for your prepaid hotel expenses must be based on a covered reason as listed in your policy or your claim will be denied. Since bathroom failure on the plane did not fit into any of the listed events, your Trip Interruption claim was denied.

    You were also not covered under Trip Delay because it would only reimburse you for (a) Any reasonable additional expenses incurred; or (b) A one-way Economy Fare to return You to Your originally scheduled return destination, but not for pre-paid non-refundable travel expenses.

    Although we understand your disappointment, the Nationwide Universal Cruise plan is still a comprehensive travel insurance policy which provides a wide range of benefits. Regrettably none of our plans will cover every situation.

    We certainly hope that you continue to consider a Nationwide plan for future trips. InsureMyTrip is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, to speak with our customer care representatives who are able to recommend the most cost effective plans to cover your primary concerns. If you would like to receive assistance in obtaining a quote or purchasing a policy, please call us at 800-487-4722 as we would be happy to assist you.

      Hi Carol- thanks for your your reply. Since our flight was cancelled because of mechanical problems and we missed a day of our trip which caused us to forfeit our prepaid hotel, why does this not qualify?

    In order to be reimbursed under Trip Interruption for your prepaid hotel expenses, mechanical breakdown must be listed as a covered reason.

    Here are the covered reason as listed in your policy:
    "TRIP INTERRUPTION
    The Company will pay a benefit, up to the maximum shown on the Confirmation of Coverage, if You are unable to continue on Your Covered Trip due to:
    (a) Sickness, Accidental Injury or death of You, Traveling Companion or Family Member...:
    (b) You or a Traveling Companion being hijacked, quarantined, required to serve on a jury, subpoenaed, the victim of felonious assault during the trip; or having his/her principal place of residence made uninhabitable by fire, flood or other natural disaster; or burglary of his/her principal place of residence during the trip;
    (c) You or a Traveling Companion being directly involved in a traffic accident substantiated by a police report, while en route to departure;
    (d) You or a Traveling Companion have a transfer of employment of two hundred fifty (250) miles or more;
    (e) A Terrorist Incident that occurs in a city listed on Your Trip itinerary during the Trip...;
    (f) The Insured, Traveling Companion or Family Member, who are military personnel, and are called to emergency duty for a natural disaster other than war;
    (g) Bankruptcy and/or Default of the Insured’s Travel Supplier which occurs more than fourteen (14) days following the Insured’s Effective Date...;
    (h) An Insured is terminated, or laid off from employment subject to three (3) years of continuous employment at the place of employment where terminated through no fault of Your own;
    (i) Natural disaster at the site of Your destination that renders the destination accommodations uninhabitable;
    (j) Strike that causes complete cessation of services for at least twenty-four (24) consecutive hours;
    (k) Weather that causes complete cessation of services of the Common Carrier for at least twenty-four (24) consecutive hours and prevents the Insured from reaching his or her destination;
    (l) You or a Traveling Companion being required to work during the Trip...;

    Unfortunately, mechanical breakdown is not a covered reason so your claim was denied.

      Thanks for the info, Carol. Is this standard for all policies, including cruise policies or could we have purchased one that did not exclude mechanical failures.

    Unfortunately, there really is no standardization of coverage especially with reference to mechanical breakdown. It would be best for you to call us for assistance when quoting and purchasing a policy.

      Thanks so much for taking the time to get back to me. I hope that people like me won’t assume coverage when there is none. As a p and c person for 30 years for a RI company I should probably know better but when you purchase a package called ‘cruise’, is it unreasonable to assume that it is comprehensive? I guess research is in order.

There is no substitute for peace of mind while traveling. Even though my husband is a physician, we never travel without travel insurance. We have watched others without travel insurance suffer not only medical maladies but the terrible financial consequences of not having travel insurance. It is just not worth the stress to travel without insurance.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Choice Cruise
I purchased this insurance for a 28 day Transatlantic/Baltic cruise on Holland America cruise line. I purchased it about two weeks before the final cruise payment was due and paid the premium for the price of cruise. When I paid the final payment, the cruise line had dropped the final payment amount due. I contacted your representative about a reduction in the insurance coverage and was informed no adjustments are allowed only if the cruise cost went up would they make an adjustment. It seemed one sided. Then on the cruise, the first port of call was cancelled. The Captain felt the seas were too rough to safely dock the ship. In addition, on our return flight home to Ohio from Copenhagen Denmark we were experinced United's lack of customer respect when we landed in Chicago O'Hare. The flight from Copenhagen to Chicago was on-time and without problem. United continued to delay our connecting flight home and then we boarded the plane at 11:45 PM after almost three hours of delay. The pilot told us we had to get off the ground and waited on the tarmac until 1:20 AM the next day when the pilot announced he was out of time. We returned to terminal and had to wait at Customer Service to get rebooked on another flight at 7:42 AM. No food or hotel vouchers from United Airlines. When we got home we called to file a claim. It is just remarkable how much documentation the claim department required to process our missed port of call and airline delay. I don't understand why they need credit card statements showing you paid for your cruise if you have a final cruise document that shows zero balance and you have proof that you took the cruise by providing your final on-board statement. Nationwide did not pay the amount for miss port of call but a lower inconvenience benefit. Likewise, Nationwide did not pay the full amount for flight delay of more than 6 hours but only our actual out of pocket cost (coffee and scones) that we incurred at 5 AM when Starbucks opened. I would shop for other insurance providers next time as well as look at other companies than Insure my Trip for vacation protection coverage. It should not be burdensome to file a claim.

    Thank you for your feedback. We received the following response from Nationwide:

    "As with other insurance, we do require proof of loss. While it may seem that we request an excess of documentation, the requested information all establishes the proof of loss. If we can establish the loss without all of the documentation submitted, we oftentimes forego requesting additional information. However, in cases where we do not receive all of the necessary information with the initial claim package and cannot make a claim determination, we will request additional information from the members. In this instance, the members were very good about providing the information necessary to process the claim and we were able to get their payments sent within 2 days of receipt."
