We had purchased a policy through InsureMyTrip with Nationwide. A week before our cruise we experienced a family emergency that would prevent us from going on the cruise. I contacted the cruise line and airlines. They all let us rebook for a later time. I then contacted Nationwide, they told us they would not refund but would transfer the policy. We said that was acceptable and sent them the information they had requested. Two week later I had heard nothing so I contacted again. We were told they had not received our info. So I resent. That was the last I have heard from Nationwide.
Its not worth being upset about so we have moved on. But I do find it to be very interesting that the only "issue" we had with canceling was with the company we had purchased a policy from to prevent any "issues". We plan to continue purchasing policies through InsureMyTrip, but with some other carrier.

The Essential Plan seems to be reasonably priced for the coverage. Medical evacuation and trip cancellation are my two concerns on any trip and this one has good coverage for that. Fortunately, I did not need to use the plan, but had the peace of mind that it was there. I have purchased this plan several times for cruises, and haven't had to use any of the provisions. One of the couples I travelled with this time had a medical issue 3 days before the trip and one ended up in hospital. He was discharged in time to go, but might have needed the plan if he wasn't (they also had purchased the plan). It just seems like a prudent purchase when you've invested so much in a vacation. Like other insurance you have, you hate to pay for it, hope to never need it, but want the coverage in case...

While we did not file a claim, there was a guest on the same cruise as us who passed away while on an excursion in Honduras. Knowing his family had to stay behind when the ship sailed away so they could make arrangements to transport him back to the United States, I was reminded of how expensive that process could be. The peace of mind of the coverage we took out made me feel much more confident we made the right choice in purchasing this policy, even if we had no need to file a claim on it.

Universal Cruise
I have used the Nationwide cruise insurance several times. It always seems to offer really good coverage for the price. The one time that I did have to make a cancellation claim due to illness, the claim process was fairly easy and quick.
