We usually buy the Nationwide Essential travel insurance at the same time we make tour/travel reservations. Although tour companies offer similar coverage, it usually costs more. A couple of times we have needed to adjust the dates of coverage a little (i.e. extended the trip or airline schedule changes) and were able to modify coverage dates fairly easily with no additional cost. Fortunately, we have not needed to file a claim for the 6 or 8 trips we have insured, so I can't comment on the claim process. Overall, the Nationwide Essential Plan seems adequate and flexible enough to allow us to customize of coverage to meet our needs.

I know that Traveler insurance is very expensive for "older" travelers, based on many foreign trips over the years. This trip with Nationwide Mutual was no different -- very expensive to get the "full" coverage that I desire and value (especially "Cancel for Any Reason"). I think the cost should be quite a bit less, since I feel that the companies selling this insurance and making a "handsome profit" (considering the risks) for the vast majority of policies that they write!

We had to cancel our trip for medical reasons. We filed a claim, which was handled expeditiously. It took a while to gather the needed documents and to make sure everything was correct on my end. I was pleasantly surprise, actually shocked,
to receive a check in about three weeks.

I did not need to file a claim for this trip, but I have filed 4 claims with Nationwide travel insurance over the last several years, and all 4 were handled promptly and courteously. We will continue to use Nationwide for our cruise travel insurance.

Before my trip began, I changed the number of insured days on my vacation from 28 days to 22 days, but I received NO refund for the reduced coverage. Although I reduced the number of insured days by 6, I was charged the same amount as for the full 28 days, $524. It seems to me that I should have been charged a lesser fee for a shorter coverage period.
