We recently traveled overseas shortly after my husband's mother had to have unexpected heart surgery. Having trip insurance freed us from the constant worry that if she were suddenly to have another medical emergency, we'd lose all the money we put down towards the trip. It was well worth the modest cost, and the customer service representatives I worked with when researching and purchasing our policy were knowledgeable and friendly. I had a very good experience with the plan and my claim which was paid promptly.
I missed my connecting flight due to weather. I had paid for a non-refundable train ticket which I lost due to the delay, plus 1 day hotel. I provided all the needed documents including one from the airline confirming the delay and I received my covered refund promptly. Again, I was very satisfied with the treatment I received.

The best time to read the terms and conditions of a comprehensive travel insurance policy is within 10 days after purchase. Most policies have a 10 or 14 day review period. If for any reason you wish to cancel the plan, you can do so for a full refund of premium, minus a small service fee. After you surpass the review period, the plan cannot be cancelled.
