I have a question about this subject!

Question:

What type of policy covers the expenses of a beach house rental cancellation? We would only need that cost covered, no airfare or medical or baggage claim.
- MeganB,
06/06/2020

Answer:

Trip cancellation coverage is available as part of a comprehensive plan, which includes other benefits such as emergency medical, baggage and trip delay. We do not offer any trip cancellation only plans currently. Comprehensive plans will offer trip cancellation coverage allowing reimbursement of your prepaid, non-refundable trip cost if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason listed in the policy certificate. If you are concerned you may have to cancel your trip for something other than a covered reason, such as fear of travel related to COVID-19 or state closures, you would want to look at a comprehensive plan that offers optional Cancel for Any Reason protection. There are some eligibility requirements for Cancel For Any Reason protection, such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days after making your initial trip payment/deposit, and you must cancel your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure. Cancel For Any Reason can reimburse a portion, typically up to 50%-75%, of your trip cost depending on the plan purchased. A policy with Cancel For Any Reason selected can cost an additional 40%-60% more than a standard policy, is not available in all states, and eligibility requirements may differ by company. If you would like assistance finding a plan that best fits your needs, you can call our Customer Care department at 800-487-4722 to speak with a licensed travel insurance representative.

I booked flights using miles and only had to pay the taxes. I have yet to book lodging. Therefore, my question is whether or not I can buy the insurance only when I purchase lodging?
- Gabriela,

Answer:

You can purchase most policies up until the day before departure, however; you may not be eligible for some time sensitive benefits if you do not purchase within 10-21 days of the initial trip deposit/payment. Some time sensitive benefits are, but not limited to: Pre-Existing Condition Waiver, Financial Default, Terrorism, Cancel For Any Reason and Cancel For Work Reasons. The Initial Trip Payment is the very first time any money was exchanged for your trip. This would include the use of frequent flyer miles.

Question:

Would a Cancel For Any Reason cover cancellation of a November trip to Costa Rica trip if my horse becomes seriously ill close to my departure date? Would this require a letter from my veterinarian to comply? Thanks.
- Susan,
03/16/2020

Answer:

With "Cancel for Any Reason", you can literally cancel for any reason whatsoever and you do not need to provide a specific reason. You just have to meet the requirements for this benefit to be eligible. There are typically 3 conditions that must be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider: Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of First Trip Payment; Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip arrangements must be canceled more than 48 -72 hours prior to the departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, this benefit will typically reimburse you 75% of your trip cost, unless otherwise noted. To view policies that offer this benefit, if you qualify, click on the "cancel for any reason" filter on the left side of the quote results page.

Question:

We are planning to go to Denver in 3 weeks. We purchased tickets last night through United and they are offering no change/cancellation fees and the tickets can be used up to 12 months from date of issue. Is it worth purchasing travel insurance in this case? Or is it redundant coverage?
- Anna,
03/12/2020

Answer:

If you are comfortable with accepting a credit from the travel suppliers there isn't a need to obtain Trip Cancellation coverage. If you wanted other travel protection benefits such as lost baggage or travel delay coverage, it may be a good idea to still obtain a comprehensive policy for your trip. Comprehensive Plans are the most widely known form of coverage and are often called package plans. Typically, a Comprehensive Plan will offer a variety of benefits for travelers, covering a wide range of concerns. Most provide coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip interruption, Baggage loss, Medical, Dental, Emergency Evacuation, 24 Hour Traveler Assistance, Baggage Delay, Travel Delay, and Accidental Death.

Question:

The U.S. State Department has prohibited entry to the U.S. from Europe for 30 days effective Friday 13MARCH2020. I will be in Europe with a return date during this time. If I can’t return is this covered in any manner?
- Bill,
03/12/2020

Answer:

It is important to know the details of any directive that has been set forth by the government, and to also review the covered reasons for trip cancellation and interruption on any plans that you are reviewing or have purchased. Since Coronavirus is now a known event, standard travel insurance policies are not going to offer coverage for related flight cancellations or travel warnings. It is best to check with your travel suppliers to see if they are offering options to cancel or reschedule your travel arrangements without additional fees or penalties.

Question:

What if I have a death on the family, for example, but then our flight is also canceled due to flights being suspended due to corona virus? Would insurance apply because of my circumstances or be excluded because of corona virus?
- Alissa,
03/11/2020

Answer:

We do understand your concern as news of Coronavirus develops daily. It is recommended that you contact your travel agent and/or travel suppliers to see if they are offering the ability to cancel and receive a refund or rebook travel to a later date. Generally, travel insurance does not cover trip cancellation due fear of travel. Also, since events related to Coronavirus are now foreseen, coverage may not be available to cancel your trip on a standard Comprehensive plan. The only way to have any coverage to cancel your trip, would be to purchase a comprehensive plan with optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage selected. There are some eligibility requirements for this coverage, such as insuring 100% of pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, purchasing your coverage within 10-21 days of your initial trip payment, and you must cancel your trip no less than 2 days prior to departure. Cancel For Any Reason can reimburse a portion, typically up to 50%-75%, of your trip cost depending on the plan purchased. A policy with Cancel For Any Reason can cost an additional 40%-60% more than a standard policy, is not available in all states, and eligibility requirements may differ by company. Standard Comprehensive plans do generally cover the unforeseen illness, injury or death of a listed traveler, traveling companion or family member. One thing to keep in mind is that the person (traveling or non-traveling) must be in good health at the time that the plan was purchased and may be subject to a pre-existing condition lookback period. If they are not in good health or there are concerns related to pre-existing conditions, a policy with Cancel For Any Reason selected would be the only option to receive reimbursement of a portion of your trip cost in the event you need to cancel your trip for this reason.

Hi, have heard that tour operators cancel trips . We have booked a tour and flight component with the same company, hence the flights were scheduled to suit the tour. Should the tour operator cancel the tour due to lack of numbers and therefore it doesn't go ahead are covered by insurance. My understanding is they may try to reschedule us on to another tour and therefore dates would change, flight dates would change and therefore the cost of flights paid for in full last year will increase a lot. We are yet to purchase insurance but would like to know how to avoid having to pay extra money as we have spend all our savings for this trip and would not be able to find extra $$ should this happen.

There are 3 conditions that must be met to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason Rider as follows: Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of First Trip Payment; Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure; Trip arrangements must be canceled more than 48 -72 hours prior to the departure date. If you meet all 3 of these conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you 75% of your trip costs, unless otherwise noted.

Question:

We are planning a 1day trip in the UK staying at several different hotels which we have booked and for some of which we have had to pay a non-refundable deposit or for which the whole charge is due if we do not cancel well in advance. If we had to cancel because - say - the car broke down and couldn't be repaired in time would travel insurance generally cover this situation?
- Marion,

Answer:

Unfortunately, that is not a covered reason under Trip Cancellation with our policies. The number one covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is the unforeseen illness or injury of you or a traveling companion that deems you unfit to travel, by order of a licensed physician; or the unforeseen hospitalization or death of a family member. My 17 year old daughter is taking a trip to Ireland with her school music dept. in June 2017. We had to give the $300 deposit in September 2016 and the second and final payments due in January and March. Just recently she has been going through some therapy (not a medical doctor) for some issues and we are concerned that this may not be the best time for her to be away from us depending upon how therapy goes. I did not buy any trip insurance since this just came up recently. Is there anything I can do to obtain insurance for at least a partial refund for a CFAR? Thanks.

Question:

My girlfriend and I are traveling to Asia in June; I am 100% going but my girl-friend could possibly cancel due to work (work reason is not covered under normal Trip-cancellation terms). I only need trip-cancellation coverage, whereas my girlfriend would need CFAR coverage. One of the conditions for CFAR coverage eligibility is that I must "Insure ALL prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure." If I am paying for both airline tickets at once, does this clause mean that I must insure the total costs of flights (for my gf and myself)? or is it simply referring to the total airline costs for the policy holder with the CFAR option (my gf). Is it possible to get two separate plans and insured the costs of our individual flights? (even if its all been paid together)? In addition, say my gf cancels and invokes the coverage, does my gf (policy holder) need to fill out the claim or does the person who paid (me) for the policy do that?
- Terence,
03/15/2017

Answer:

The best way to insure this type of trip is buying two separate policies. Most plans do offer a benefit called Cancel for Work Reasons, which is separate from Cancel for Any Reason. If you have the time off already approved and you are concerned that your employer revokes the previously approved time off, that is what this benefit is designed for. If your concern is not being able to get off of work in time for the trip, that is when you will need Cancel for Any Reason. Each traveler would insure 100% of their portion of their trip cost on their policy in order to qualify for that benefit.

You can purchase a policy up until the day before departure, however; you might not have coverage for some time sensitive benefits. Some time sensitive benefits are, but not limited to: Pre-Existing Condition Waiver, Financial Default, Terrorism, Cancel For Any Reason and Cancel For Work Reasons. Most plans require that you purchase a policy within 10 - 30 days of your initial trip payment, and insure all prepaid, non-refundable trip costs to receive these time sensitive benefits. I'm not sure if this question was answer directly. If my father (actually in my case), grandfather, passes away during my trip and I have to cut my trip short and fly home, will trip interruption reimburse me for the remainder of my trip. - Diana,

Trip Interruption due to an unforeseen illness or injury of non-traveling family member who requires your care would provide reimbursement of the unused, pre-paid and nonrefundable travel arrangements and the cost of airline change fees to return home up to the maximum Trip Interruption limit. Please be sure to check the plan exclusions, and gain an understanding of how the policy views pre-existing medical conditions. Each plan provides a definition of family member. The definition of family member typically includes: spouse, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

As soon as you make the first deposit/booking/payment towards the trip you become eligible to buy insurance. Question:

I am planning on a month long trip with a tour company. It will take me to 3 countries. There is the main trip with a pre and post trip country. When looking at policies, they don't seem to make allowances for the pre and post trip countries. Do I purchase based on the country I will spend the most time in, the main trip country? If so, will my time in the other countries be covered?
- Judith,
01/25/2014

Answer:

The length of a "trip" is considered from the day you leave your home until the day you return home and you would insure all prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements that are made prior to departure. The destination is whichever country you will be spending the most time in during your trip. If you'll be visiting several destinations equally (or spending most of it on a cruise ship) then list the country where your trip begins. You will still be covered while traveling outside of the selected country, so long as you are not visiting a destination that is considered restricted. If a policy does consider certain destinations restricted, you can find this list in the terms and conditions section.

Question:

I will not purchase airline tickets until months after purchasing trip insurance. can we just insure the non-refundable costs of hotels? We might have non-refundable fees for re-scheduling the air faire and want to insure that we are not disqualified from canceling for any reason.
- CHARLESR,
12/22/2013

Answer:

Since you do not know the cost of your airfare, you can insure what you have for non refundable expenses thus far, to get the policy in place during the time requirement for Cancel For Any Reason. Once you book additional arrangements, you can then call us back within 10/14/21/30 days (policy specific) of booking that arrangement to add it to your policy, pay any additional premium due, and keep your Cancel For any Reason Rider. When you are requesting the optional Cancel For Any Reason Rider you must insure ALL pre paid non refundable expenses. Unless you would receive the full value of the air travel ticket back in cash, the ticket is non refundable. Some airlines offer you the ability to pay a fee and reuse the ticket within a year, this does not equate to being a refundable ticket, because at no point can you get your actual money back. In these types of situations, you would need to insure the full cost of the ticket to be Cancel For Any Reason compliant. When it comes to regular trip cancellation (specific covered reasons), provided you are not insuring for pre-existing medical conditions coverage, on most plans you would be able to insure the "re-issue" fee charged by the airline to re use your ticket if you so choose. Please keep in mind if you choose to do this, and then are unable to use the ticket within the allotted time frame set forth by the airline, you cannot go back and change your claim to the full cost of the ticket.
