Wanted a little security for our trip to Sicily as our granddaughter was just completing 6 months of chemo and not knowing if we would be needed to return for any unexpected medical emergencies. Luckily we went and came without any incidents. But nice to know we were covered just incase.

This is an awful plan. I had to pay thousands upfront for hospitalization. That took away funds needed for the remainder of my trip. That was the whole purpose of obtaining insurance.
The customer service was no help. The number on the policy did not work. I had to go online to get a number to call.
Never again and I will let everyone know.

We bought this coverage hoping not to get sick or delayed on our trip, and to never have to file a claim. BUT: we both got very sick and had to return home early from abroad. We called AIG Travel Assistance to inform them of our plans. They were very responsive, caring and supportive throughout the process. Their Medical Assistance Department followed up with us periodically and helped open the claim. The adjuster who handled our claim was at all times very professional, courteous, prompt and fair. We feel our claim was handled fairly and quickly, and will definitely use AIG Travel Guard Essential again. Medical costs can add up quickly, and the last thing you want when you get sick in a foreign country is worry how you are going to pay for the medical help or return home.

As a former insurance agent I always use Insuremytrip when I travel. I can choose the coverages I want & the price I'm willing to pay. The financial stability of the company is important to me as well & I would not purchase insurance with a company with less than an A- rating no matter how attractive the premium is.

Our trip was interrupted by a flight cancellation which threatened our ability to reach the start of our scuba liveaboard dive boat. Fortunately, we secured another flight, at an increased cost, and were able to make our cruise. The insurance would not cover the increase in cost which made us realize that the coverage was not what we expected. We now realize that if we had not gotten a substitute flight at an increased cost, we would have not been reimbursed for our liveaboard cruise which was the most expensive portion of our trip -- this is what we actually wanted covered by the insurance. Very disappointing and we will not purchase travel insurance again except for, and through, our medical provider and for medical coverage only. Paying over $1k for this insurance and not having protection against an airline cancellation is frustrating. Yes, if we understood all the details beforehand we would have known this ahead of time, but that was not the case. I am sure that is true for most purchasers.

This was one of the rare trips where we did need to file a claim, due to a cancelled flight. Once we submitted the paperwork and documentation, AIG processed and paid the claim pretty quickly without squawking about it. So experience with the policy was good and smooth.

I really can’t make a true review, because we have yet to have an opportunity to use it. However, we have gotten an email from the car rental company stating there was a large scratch on the back bumper. We never saw that, never noticed it, and have no idea if it was there when we got the car. So, is AIG going to cover that damage if we are charged with it?

It’s also important to note that while many Travel Guard products have “primary” medical, the Essential Plan is our more economical option and medical is “secondary”. This means the Insured would file through any other primary provider first, before filing a claim for the excess under their Essential policy. The Essential plan offers an optional upgrade called the Medical Bundle to make the medical benefit “primary” instead of “secondary”, but this upgrade needs to be elected and purchased prior to the trip departure date. As noted, we have many plans that include primary medical automatically without needing to purchase an upgrade for it. Our Preferred plan for example, is the next step up from the Essential plan, and it includes primary medical. Please refer to the description of the Travel Medical Expense benefit within your Policy of Insurance for more information, or call us to learn more. That being said, we are also sorry to hear you experienced challenges while trying to contact us during your trip. You indicated you did not wish to be contacted in regards to your review, but please let us know which phone number you were calling, so we can fully investigate and rectify the issue if need be.
