What you are not told when you purchase a plan to cover your nonrefundable plane fare is that, if you have to cancel your trip, the airline will charge you a change fee and give you a credit for the rest of the fare you paid, and, since you have a credit, the insurance company will only cover the change fee. Your alternative, according to the insurer, is to tell the airline you don't want the credit, but then if for some reason the insurer doesn't pay, you've lost that money.

Fortunately I did not have to use this and I don't usually get trip insurance but this was a 15 night Hawaiian cruise and anything could go wrong with so many moving parts. Thankfully we were healthy and everything went 'almost' exactly as planned.

It is such a comfort knowing that if something were to happen, my travel money would be protected. My traveling companion recently had an episode with her heart and I was afraid that we might have t cancel our recent trip just a few days for our departure. I do not understand why the insurance coverage must be activated at the time refundable reservation deposits are made? It seems to make more sense to require coverage premiums when the reservation is paid for and deposit is no longer refundable?

Most of our providers who offer the Pre-Existing Conditions Waiver will require you to purchase your policy within the first 10-21 days of your initial trip payment. Some of our companies, like Travel Safe, do not require that you insure the full cost of your trip upfront and allow you to add on to your policy as your costs become non-refundable. This allows you to only pay for the coverage you need at that time, and not over insure.
