I'm an insurance broker so the purchase of trip insurance was not an extraneous purchase for me - it was second nature. I am used to comparing policies and premiums - also second nature - and I found that Insuremytrip and CSA provided ease of comparison and pricing, and ease of purchase and of confirmation. Your policy can be delivered by e-mail. Best to purchase at least couple of weeks prior to your departure date.
I returned from Egypt about a month before the revolts happened. I did not need to use the insurance since I apparently planned my trip under a lucky star - but people I know were there when the US was telling travelers to get the heck out of Egypt. If anyone doubts the wisdom of purchasing trip insurance, look at the provisions for "Travel Delay". The affordable plan from CSA that I purchased would have provided protection up to an amount of $1,000 - which I'm sure the folks who eventually were flown to Istanbul (on their own dime) and then left to make further arrangements back to the U.S. would certainly have welcomed.

Frankly, I was surprised at the ease with which I made my claim. Initially, they sent me an email with forms to fill out, which they then mailed to me (go figure) but it looked like another trip I had taken, so I didn't send them back. Still received my check for illness on a foreign cruise! I'm very happy.

AMEX credit cards have a good rep for protecting insureds in disputes with vendors. But the AMEX insurance language implies more protection for AMEX than for the insured. Perhaps all travel insurance does this. In any case, I was fortunately not to have any reason for filing a claim.

since the disturbances in Egypt Jan25th - Feb 11th were "domestic disturbances" these events did not allow the travel insurance policy i bought to come into effect and so i feel that the purchase of travel insurance was a total waste of my money - will not do that again from this company

Our trip was to Egypt in late December 2010 and early January 2011. Our trip was fantastic, with no problems, and we did not need to use any of the benefits from the insurance. But when, 10 days after we left the country, Egypt erupted in revolution, I was really, really glad we had the insurance. We could have very easily been caught up in the turmoil.
