My American Air Lines flight from Denver to Raleigh was cancelled October 1 because of Hurricane Florence even thought RDU Airport was not closed. Maybe AA could not get the scheduled aircraft to Denver. I had to spend Monday night in Denver. Because the hurricane formed before I left on my tri[ I was not reimbursed for my motel room. I think for now on I will just skip trip insurance and I a reserve fund for things like that. It would be less expensive in the long run: $288 for insurance, $150 for room (not reimbursed).

    Thank you very much for taking the time to submit your review. It is never pleasant to hear that your claim was denied. However, once a storm has been named, it is a foreseen event and no claims related to that storm would be covered. Since this plan was purchased after Hurricane Florence was named, there would be no coverage, unfortunately. To have coverage for hurricane related claims, you would be required to purchase a policy prior to a storm being named, this would be the standard for all travel insurance providers.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
I purchased this because last year I got derailed by hurricane Irma. I paid a lot for house so insured in case. Well got hit by Florence. Roads were cut off by flooding on 501 getting in to Myrtle beach and Conway flooding. With the fear it would continue to get worse not better. Having two babies to risk flooding roads and the constant fear of flooding, roads were closing constantly. Could not risk their lives. When tried to make claim informed since house wasn’t destroyed by hurricane had no insurance. Everyone I told said this was bull. So I spent 800 to fly in so we could keep my family out of danger and we did the trip. People told us they were stuck on roads 12 hours, cars ran out of gas stranded everywhere and people feared getting out that made it in as rivers crested. This was a worthless piece of paper. Great company was surprised.

    We certainly understand your frustration when told that there was no coverage to cancel your trip under this policy. In order to receive payment under Trip Cancellation, you must cancel your trip for a covered reason as listed in the policy. The number one covered reason is the unforeseen illness or injury of you or a traveling companion that deems you unfit to travel, by order of a licensed physician; or the unforeseen hospitalization or death of a family member. However, there are other covered reasons to cancel that may vary by plan.

    With respect to hurricanes and natural disasters, here are the covered reasons included in your policy:
    "You or a Traveling Companion... having Your principal place of residence made Uninhabitable by fire, flood, volcano, earthquake, hurricane or other natural disaster...;
    You, a Traveling Companion or Family Member, who are military personnel, and are called to emergency duty for a natural disaster;
    Weather that causes complete cessation of services of the Common Carrier for at least twenty-four (24) consecutive hours and prevents You from reaching Your destination. This benefit will not apply if the potential natural disaster has been forecasted or a storm has been named prior to purchase of this coverage...;
    Natural disaster at the site of Your destination that renders Your destination accommodations Uninhabitable..."

AIG Travel Travel Guard Gold
Didn't cover a natural disaster that was part of a declared state of emergency in the area we traveled to and were supposed to stay at. We were told as long as flights were flying and doors stayed open at the hotel, we were on our own.

    Although we certainly can understand your disappointment with the AIG denial of coverage, this decision would most likely have been the same regardless of the insurance provider. It is very important for all buyers of Comprehensive plans to understand that reimbursement under Trip Cancellation must be based on the covered reasons as listed in the Certificate of Insurance. These covered reasons, which may vary by plan and state, are readily available for your review prior to purchase. Here are the covered reasons with respect to Inclement Weather and Natural Disaster as listed in your AIG Travel Guard Gold plan:

    "The Company will reimburse the Insured a benefit, up to the
    Maximum Limit shown in the Schedule or Declarations Page if an
    Insured cancels his/her Trip or is unable to continue on his/her Trip due to any of the following Unforeseen events...
    (b) Inclement Weather causing delay or cancellation of travel...
    (d) the Insured’s Primary Residence being made Uninhabitable or Inaccessible by Natural Disaster, vandalism or burglary;
    (e) the Insured’s Destination being made Uninhabitable or Inaccessible by flood, tornado, earthquake,
    volcanic eruption, fire, wildfire or blizzard that is due to natural causes...
    (j) a named hurricane causing cancellation or interruption of
    travel to the Insured’s Destination that is Inaccessible or Uninhabitable. Claims are not payable if a hurricane is foreseeable prior to the Insured’s effective date. A hurricane is foreseeable on the date it becomes a named storm. The Company will only pay the benefits for Losses occurring within 30 days after the named hurricane makes the Insured’s
    Destination Uninhabitable or Inaccessible...
    (n) the Insured’s or Traveling Companion’s company is deemed
    to be unsuitable for business due to burglary or Natural Disaster and the Insured or Traveling Companion is directly involved as a Key Employee of the disaster recovery team."

    In the future, you may wish to consider purchasing a plan with the Cancel for Any Reason rider. This option, which is available in the AIG Travel Guard Gold and Platinum policies for an additional premium, would reimburse you for 50% of your penalties if you decide to cancel your trip for "other than a covered reason".

Our claim, based on the French rail strike, was paid in full and very promptly, with no questions or difficulty whatsoever. We now use Generali for all our trip insurance. We're impressed by the coverage for the price, and the great claim response.

C&F Travel Insured International Worldwide Trip Protector Lite
The plan is very good and covered the necessary items. I just thought that 10% ($190) was a little steep to cover $2000 in expenses. Like most insurance, if you don't use it, it seems expensive, but if you do collect, then it was a good purchase. Win-lose? All depends which side you are on. Thanks.

    CF Travel Insured premiums are calculated based on the age of the traveler, the cost of the trip and the length of your trip. Your premium was also the total amount for two travelers while your premium was per person.
