This plan includes coverages that are optional upgrades on the Travel Basic and Travel Select plans. My wife and I are residents of different states but travel together and I feel we should be able to purchase one policy instead of 2. We had an issue with a car malfunction that was not covered and I feel it should have been.

We purchased Travelex trip insurance for our trip to Canada last summer. On the 7th day of our 19 day trip, my husband fell while hiking in Newfoundland. Parks Canada staff were phenomenal, as well as the paramedics who came to the scene to assess his situation. We were 5 km in on the trail, and there was question about how we were going to get back to the trail head and get him to the medical attention he needed. He was carried out using a wheelbarrow-like apparatus to a clearing along the trail where a helicopter was waiting to take us to the closest medical facility. Diagnosis: completely torn quadriceps muscle. Luckily, we were told that Mr. Trudeau would be covering the cost of the helicopter, but I was not worried because we had trip insurance. I saved all the receipts from the doctor and emergency room, as well as the medications and apparatus we needed to purchase (a knee immobilizer). We contacted Travelex and they offered to help us if we chose to interrupt our trip-however, even though the trip would be a very different one than we had planned, we chose to continue to the end. I submitted the required forms, along with all of the original receipts when we returned, and within a few week's time, we received our refund. Travelex was great to work with!!

baggage was stolen due to rental car break in. They covered the cost of the car damage and most of the stolen items. The only issue was poor customer care and correspondence at times. I had to call/email to make them follow up and send the same receipts/docs more than once bc they did not read it or lost it in email. However, I was reimbursed for most of the stolen items. It took about a month for the entire process.

I am disappointed in the plan. I feel that your exclusion to cover mental health issues as a cause for cancellation is discriminatory. My wife did not plan her breakdown so we could get money back on the trip. It happened at an inopportune time as health issues can do. If she had a "medical issue" such as appendicitis or a broken leg we would have been reimbursed but due to the bias that surrounds mental health in this country we were denied. A health issue is a health issue, be it medical or emotional, and all should be covered.

The Travelex Travel Max plan does have the following exclusion: mental, nervous, or psychological disorders, except if hospitalized. This exclusion is a standard exclusion in most, if not all travel insurance plans. In the future, please consider calling us prior to purchase to discuss the plan exclusions. We strongly recommend customers read the terms and conditions of the policy within the review period to determine if the policy fits your needs. Fortunately did not have to use the insurance, but the proactive communication from the company was very good. The smart phone app is nice to have.

Travel insurance also includes Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption which would reimburse you if you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to covered reasons that are specifically listed in the plan. The number one covered reason in most plans is the unexpected sickness, injury or death of you, your traveling companion and your family member, but there are other covered reasons which vary from plan to plan. However, no plan includes canceling due to a car malfunction, so you would have needed to purchase the Cancel for Any Reason option.
