When booking a non-refundable 20-day trip to China through Sinorama Holidays (which included airfare, hotels, meals, tours and in-country transportation), we were urged to purchase our own travel insurance. We are in our seventies, and have traveled to places like India and Russia, but never purchased travel insurance before. We are SO GLAD we did. We purchased an all-inclusive Global Alert policy online through InsureMyTrip / TripMate. It covered us from the day we booked (in October) through the dates of the trip (late March into April). We paid only $180 each to cover the trip cost of $2499 each. The peace of mind was great in itself. But when, two days before departure, my husband developed stomach cramps and a high fever and was told to go to the emergency room, we were SO GLAD we had that insurance. Long story short, my husband was admitted, put on IV antibiotics (he had diverticulitis, something he'd never had before, with a large abscess, which if it had burst while traveling could have proved fatal). Since then he has had 18 inches of his lower intestine surgically removed. (We never saw this coming--we are physically active and walk a mile or two each day.) We were sorry to miss our China trip. Our bags were packed and were so excited to be going. But how much worse it would have been if we had lost our $5000 too! Global Alert refunded us within a month (only recommendation: better communication during claim period.) Now we have the funds to book another trip to China if and when my husband is able to travel there. THANK YOU!!

Hard to review when we didn't need to file a claim. The only glitch was a considerable delay in leaving Washington on May 18. A malfunctioning bathroom on our 5:20 pm United flight to Rome, followed by a thunderstorm and then a crew timeout, meant that we did not leave until 4:00 am the next morning instead. A long night in the airport--and we lost a day of our vacation in Italy. But United sent an apology and a certificate for $120 toward a future flight, so making a claim seemed unnecessary.

Fortunately, we didn't have to use the plan, but we had great piece of mind that we could be evacuated in a medical emergency from China. Secondary was the safety of our monetary investment in our trip. The cost was half the price quoted by our tour operator.

I guess the old saying still holds true, namely that you get what you pay for. This policy appeared to be a good value, but the coverage was less than expected. Specifically, I lost a day of touring because of a traveling companion's medical problems and expected a reimbursement for that day's loss. Instead, I was informed that no benefits would be paid. The plan apparently says that for an all-inclusive tour like we were on, pro-rata benefits are payable only if an, "entire day, including the overnight accommodations, must be missed." Although we spent our touring time in the local hospital's Emergency Room, that is not sufficient. Some of that is my fault for not reading ALL the FINE print, but what is NOT my fault is that it took 6 months for them to reject the claim. This is, therefore, not a company I would be quick to ever use again.

    We do want you and your fellow customers to be aware that InsureMyTrip offers a Customer Advocate Program. Customer Advocates are representatives assigned to assist customers who experience issues after filing a claim. Requesting a Customer Advocate is as simple as calling 800-487-4722 or emailing customercare@insuremytrip.com, explaining the events which resulted in a claim, and the challenges you are facing.

After the initial purchase, I had to make changes as our plans changed. The representatives were very accommodating changing our coverage. Fortunately, we do not need to file a claim.

I became sick and was unable to understand the French operators to get a Dr. I called the help number and the women could not understand that I had a number and just wanted her to call it for me. France has a Dr SOS service that will send a Dr to your hotel. She put me on hold for a very long time and I gave up. I walked down the street to a pharmacy and was given a Dr's name and address and we went to his office for care. I had no help from this insurer.

I find it very hard to judge a plan until something happens-then you find out really how good/bad the plan and the company behind it is. I chose the plan but gratefully did not have to use it.
