I was not told that my plan would not cover me if I did not make it to a port.

Thank you for your review. Most plans do not offer coverage for a missed port. In the future, please call us at 800-487-4722 and we can help you find a plan to cover your concerns.

I had to change the coverage by two days more and the insurance company charged me $9.00 more even though the price of the trip decreased. They would not give me a refund or at least not charge me the $9.00. Nickel and dime me!

Thank you for your feedback. Although we are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the policy, the HTH Worldwide Trip Protector plan included a 10 Review Period:

"All premium is non-refundable after a ten (10) day review period from the date of purchase in the event You have not incurred any claims during that time. In the event the premium paid for coverage is less than the required premium for coverage, benefits will be paid in direct proportion of the actual amount paid to the required premium due."

I visited a doctor in Japan and got medication. The entire cost of the visit was less than my premium. I filled out the claim form with all the requested information, which includes a form (in the same PDF) for authorizing communication via email (note: their only communication options are email and postal mail). Their initial response came 8 days later and was to send proof I was in Japan (and would be leaving) and that I did not fill out the electronic communication waiver (what?). I replied the same day with the waiver attached and flight details.

After that I didn't hear anything from them, not even a confirmation, until I asked about it 1 month from my initial claim. 5 days later I received in postal mail an EOB that said my claim was denied for lack of documentation. Then that same day or 1 days later, I received an email saying my claim was paid by check. I received the paper check 1 week later.

Overall, I think the communication and claim process was subpar. The claim form was a non-fillable PDF that I annotated over so I didn't have to print it out and scan it. The process seems like it's designed to be difficult to use.

They don't give you any guidance on how to handle foreign languages or currencies so I had to just submit and hope they did translation/conversions (seemed to work).

The fact that they ignored their own waiver form to send me an identical waiver form and fill out again was very annoying, and the lack of communication overall really didn't sit well with me.

I can't imagine what it would have been like trying to communicate with them if I'd had anything complicated happen.

Thank you for your feedback. Even though your claim may be less than your policy premium, insurance providers still require specific documents to pay your claim. We are pleased to hear that your claim was quickly settled.

Yes, I'm aware of the document requirement. I sent all the documents requested with the initial claim except for the airline confirmation (because it there was no indication that was needed beforehand, another example of the poor guidance on submitting a claim).

Please note that the main point of my review was slow and unclear communication. The claim was not "quickly" settled, it was settled slowly and with conflicting information, and a > 1 month period of time with no response from the company.

I did not have to use the insurance but the peace of mind it provided while I was on the trip was wonderful. Knowing it was there should a need arise gave me comfort so I could have fun and no worries.

We experienced a dental problem, but were unaware that an accident/police report needed to be made and only treatment that took place there would be covered. Previous plans I've had allowed us to complete treatment at home if not an emergency situation.

Luggage was also destroyed and a claim must first be filed with airline. HTH insurance took 48 hours to respond to tell us that so we missed the 24 hour window to do so with the airline, so we couldn't file for the damaged luggage.

Will never purchase this insurance again.

Thank you for your reply. We also have a response from HTH Worldwide:

    "Thank you for your review!

Our claims department confirmed that in your email concerning the dental injury, you advised that dental treatment was not received while on the trip and that you were planning to seek treatment at home. Unfortunately, any treatment received needs to occur during the trip. Since you did not seek any dental treatment while on the trip, the plan will not consider reimbursement.

Regarding the damaged baggage, we need additional information. We will reach out to you for this so we can consider the damaged baggage claim.Thank you!"

The good news is that we encountered no events for which we needed to file a claim. Nonetheless, the peace of mind that the coverage provided for potential issues -- including trip interruption and medical emergencies -- for a very low cost was a no-brainer. The enrollment process was easy and the certificate of insurance was issued promptly. In the wake of several medical "horror" stories reported in the national news lately regarding people incurring emergency medical expenses while traveling outside of the US, trip insurance to coordinate with our existing coverages made sense. To quote Benjamin Franklin, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

The main reason I chose this plan was for the medical coverage. The best part about this insurance is that you pay nothing if medical care is needed. Just give them your card (be sure to print it out before your trip). I was fortunate that I did not have to use it but it gave me great satisfaction knowing I was covered in an emergency.

It’s really hard to evaluate a plan unless you are forced to make a claim. Fortunately our trip went perfectly & we didn’t have a chance to “test it out” to find out how good (or bad) they handle their claims.

Couple days before I went to Barcelona, the city erupted in demonstrations. Airport shut down. Roads shut down. Mass demonstrations. Many people injured. Wanted to cancel the trip, but HTH says that is not a covered event.

So I went. First night, mass demonstration couple blocks from my hotel got out of hand. Barricades burning in the street in front of the hotel, and anti-tourist graffiti spray painted on the hotel's front door. Parked cars torched on the street around the corner.

Couple days later, general strike and over 500,000 demonstrators in the streets. Metro, buses, tourist sights (Sagrada Familia), and most stores shut down.

Every day, demonstrations somewhere turning violent. TV news showing molotov cocktails being thrown at the police and all the rest of the chaos.

But that is not a covered reason to cancel. Just...Have a nice vacation.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear that you made it home safely. Unfortunately, civil unrest is not a covered reason to cancel your trip in any travel insurance plan. Civil unrest is not included in the definition of a "Terrorist Incident (which) means an incident deemed a terrorist act by the United States Government that causes property damage or loss of life."

In order to have coverage for cancelling this trip, you would have needed to purchase the optional Cancel for Any Reason coverage.

Great coverage at a great price. I'm glad I didn't need to use it but I had piece of mind that it was there if I needed it.
