Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
This was the first time in my life taking out travel insurance. We had a tropical storm interrupt our trip keeping us from making it to our hotel reservation. That hotel still charged us for the full amount & being stuck an extra night on a different island we had to quickly find accommodations for that night . The policy we purchased covered both of us for both nights . After I filled out a claim & submitted receipts I happily received full reimbursement for both lodgings . It did take about 8weeks , but I was told when I submitted my claim that they were short staffed & it would take awhile . They even sent me an email after 4 weeks apologizing for the delay . I was thrilled to get reimbursed which encouraged me to purchase this same insurance for our next trip ! Thank u

Generali Global Assistance Standard
For the FIRST time, we needed to file a claim after years of purchasing plans with no issue. I can't say enough good things about Generali! We had a cancelled flight, rebooked alternate airline, and then lost luggage! We had a variety of unexpected costs. There was work involved to document every instance (save the cancelled flight info, obtain a REASON for cancellation, save receipts for purchases). In the end, Generali supported our claim & we were so relieved. I plan to choose Generali for our next trip.

Generali Global Assistance Standard
Generali has been incredibly frustrating. I thought I had a very clear case--I had a flight cancelled due to weather and I missed a prepaid first night at an expensive lodge, and I incurred extra travel expenses due to this. First, I've needed a password reset, and sent SIX requests for this and got nowhere. There is simply no way to get help with the website or your account, either online or by phone. For this reason alone I would never use them again. Second, Generali's way of doing business is to email me once every three weeks to ask for some new document--for instance, I had to provide a letter from the airline stating WHY the flight was cancelled (I'd already provided the one saying it WAS cancelled). Then I don't hear from them for 3 weeks. Then they want something else that seems redundant. Or, they tell me they didn't get the last email I sent despite the fact I always can provide the auto reply confirmation email. The latest email they sent me seems meant for someone else--they told me they didn't hear from my "agent" (I didn't use an agent!) and are closing my claim. They are very much looking for a way to not cover my straightforward claim.

I've used Trawick twice, but never had to claim on a policy, so I can't rate their service. I needed a plan that covered pre-existing conditions and wanted coverage for COVID problems and this plan provided both.

AXA Assistance USA Gold
The plan seemed competitively priced, although not inexpensive. I did need to file a claim due to missed flights, and lost luggage.
We incurred meal expenses, a minor clothing expense, and lost a night of hotel. The total claim was around $300. I filed about 3 weeks after our trip. I submitted about 6 attachments as proof. Several weeks later, after emailing several times, asking about the status of my claim, I received an email asking for more information. I sent the same documents as well as many more, with a detailed explanation of each attachment to make it simpler for the person reviewing the claim. They also asked for 2 of their forms to be filled out, which I attached. Again, several weeks went by, I emailed and requested my claim be paid. I received ANOTHER request for the same information, stating that they were waiting for the forms which they had previously requested as well as a lot of other information, of which I had already submitted several weeks prior! I was going to call and request that someone actually look at all the data I submitted. I was stealing myself for a long, adversarial phone call, so was waiting until I had time. About a week passed and I received an email from my bank showing a Zelle payment for the full amount of my claim. No email from AXA insurance. Interesting.....
AXA is no better, no worse than other companies for which I have had to make a claim. I think they all drag the claim process out, hoping you will give up so they don't have to pay. They also ask for an exorbitant amount of information. Trip insurance is something that I feel I have to have for most international trips, but I dread having to make a claim. Luckily I didn't have to interact with an agent in this case and they eventually paid my claim. Keep every receipt, every boarding pass, etc in case you have to make a claim!
