Flights were changed by the airline 2 months prior to trip and the times did not work for us so we cancelled our trip. Nationwide would not cover our claim for a cancelled trip (was only requesting the deposit). We booked another trip for the same week as the cancelled trip and after denying our claim they would not allow us to transfer the insurance we paid for to the rescheduled trip. So we were out the money from the original trip and we had to purchase a new insurance plan for the rescheduled trip. I contacted InsuremyTrip to see if they could do anything to help and they said I had to go through Nationwide. I contacted Nationwide and they said I had to go through InsuremyTrip. I would never use Nationwide or InsuremyTrip again.

This plan uses a middle man to process claims. I can't get through the hoop jumping and defective web site to file a small claim. Theses idiots are wasting my time and seem motivated to block the legitimate claim.

We had to cancel our trip because one of our travelers became pregnant, and albeit that was a non cancel-able reason per the contract, our trip location is one of the highest Zika virus potentials in the world and per her doctors orders not to chance the trip.
The coverage was denied.
We canceled our trip because of the Zika virus not because she was pregnant.
I think this is wrong!

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. The only benefit that can be used to cancel a trip due to the fear of contracting Zika virus is Cancel for Any Reason.

Cancel for Any Reason coverage typically requires the following requirements (varies by plan):

    1) Purchase within 10-30 days of your initial trip deposit
    2) Insure 100% of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip cost
    3) Cancel the trip 2 or more days prior to departure

While Cancel for Any Reason does give you the flexibility to cancel your trip due to an increased fear of Zika, it does not protect 100% of your trip cost. Depending upon the plan, Cancel for Any Reason benefit will reimburse 50%, 70%, or 75% of your insured trip cost.

Please call us at 800-487-4772 if you have any questions about insuring against Zika related events, or the Cancel For Any Reason benefit.

Do not not buy plan from Trip Mate. It provided no coverage when I needed it most. Purchase travelex, never an issue.

I called to cancel our trip, do to the loss of my traveling companion's sister's home in Napa, Ca, during the recent fires. I was told that,
since this occurrence didn't effect either traveler's home, they would not honor a refund request. In searching for travel insurance, I
specifically looked for "cancel for any reason" insurance. Thank you for sending this request for a review; I will file it for reference
as to which insurance company to AVOID in my future travels. We lost ALL of our money, both airline and resort; we were not even
given a credit for future use for either.

We’re sorry to hear about your travel companion’s sister’s home. Primary place of residence rendered uninhabitable is a covered reason for cancellation for you or your traveling companion, but not for a family member’s or your traveling companion’s family member’s residence. Additionally the plan that you purchased did not offer Cancel for Any Reason, and since that was a benefit that you were searching for we encourage you to contact us at 1-800-243-3174 prior to purchasing a plan so that we can answer your questions, address your concerns and help you find the plan best suited for you. We hope to assist you in the future.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Essential
I had a frustrating situation with this plan. I had purchased a plan to cover my airfare and hotel for a vacation. The hotel stay I had purchased was in the form of a certificate I had bought in a charity auction. I was going to the Bahamas with my best friends, but I wound up getting ill and being unable to make the trip. The airlines refunded me my money no problem, as it was due to illness. No need to file a claim for airfare. And to not have to bother the travel insurance company with a large claim for the hotel stay certificate, I gave it to my friends to use and they paid me back for it. The only caveat was that they needed the hard copy of the certificate to be able to check in, which means I needed to FedEx it overnight to the Bahamas at a cost of $52. So I did not need to file a claim for the airfare or hotel portion of my trip.

HOWEVER - I did ask if I could file a claim for the $52 that it cost me to FedEx the certificate for use. The insurance company, though, refused to cover this cost when I called and asked about filing a claim, which is perplexing, and quite honestly, horrible customer service.

By my contacting the airline directly, as well as making sure the hotel certificate went used by my friends, I SAVED the insurance company money on having to reimburse me for a nearly $1,000 claim due to not being able to take my trip. Rather than saying "Hey, we should approve this measly $52 claim for our customer - who incurred this cost as a result of illness that prevented him from traveling," they're looking past the fact that I did not submit a claim for the larger stuff.

The company is being penny-wise and dollar foolish, and, like most insurance companies - looks for every tiny loophole in policy not to pay their customers what they deserve. I would not recommend them to anyone.

When choosing an insurance company, you want one that has empathy for its customers - some "beside manner," that assumes positive intent and doesn't make them jump through hoops when issues arise. The company's telling me that submitting a $52 claim would be denied as the tangential cost of FedExing the certificate is not covered really gets my goat.

Total waste of $150. Insurance covered nothing when I filed a claim. They said it was a pre-existing condition. The traveler was not sick when tickets were bought, but got a UTI after. will not use this company again.

Thank you for providing your review. Many travelers believe that a preexisting condition indicates that the individual is actually "sick" with that condition prior to purchasing the policy. The preexisting condition exclusion simply tells you that there is no coverage for ANY medical condition, no matter how minor, if that medical condition is referenced in your medical records as receiving treatment or a recommendation for treatment within the look-back period. Treatment may mean a new prescription, a change in prescription or a diagnostic test, even if that test came out as "negative". It would also include symptoms that would have caused a prudent person to seek treatment.

We are sure that you will all agree that this is a very broad definition that would include most medical conditions. However, keep in mind that the look-back period under the Comprehensive plans is only from 60 to 180 days (depending on plan) prior to the policy's effective date, and that the waiver of that exclusion is available in most plans. Unfortunately the AIG Travel Guard Basic plan has no option to purchase the waiver and does have a 180 day look-back period. Nevertheless, you purchased this plan on 10/09/2015 which was within 7 days of your Initial Trip Payment so had you purchased the AIG Travel Guard Silver, Gold or even Platinum plan, you could have had coverage for that condition.

In the future, please give us a call at 800-487-4722 for competitive quotes so that we can review the coverage.

I would give zero stars if that was an option. We had insured our cruise and the flights to and from. The flight to the cruise was cancelled, and after over 2 months of back and forth, the insurance company declined our claim

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. Unfortunately, this is a general exclusion with most plans.

Per your policy certificate, the following is a listed exclusion:
"12. artificial teeth and dental bridges;"

Bought the plan before our trip to the Bahamas. Had no clue there was a storm about to turn into a hurricane when I purchased it. Read the fine print and it says you have to purchase the plan before the hurricane is named and I guess that had happened the week before. Lost two days of vacation and this plan did not cover it.

Thank you for providing feedback on this plan.

We are sorry to learn that you had lost 2 days of your trip. For most policies, coverage would only apply if the reason you file a claim is considered unforeseen at the time of purchase. Once a storm or hurricane is known, coverage on a new policy would be reduced or no longer apply for a claim related.

We always recommend that you contact us directly at 1-800-487-4722 if you have any main concerns when insuring your trip. Our licensed representatives are available 7 days a week and can assist in finding you an appropriate policy for your travel needs.
