My wife incurred a visit to the Rotterdam Infirmary during our recent cruise. The bill was $181.16.
When I tried to file a claim for this Infirmary Expense with Travelex, they informed me that my wife was NOT a named insured on the policy! Somehow they had her listed as a "BENEFICIARY" and NOT as an insured on the Policy! How could that be?.....When I purchased the Policy I listed her name, date of birth, etc. as a person to be insured on the Policy. Because of this GLITCH in your system, I cannot recoup the $181.16. I tried explaining this problem to the Travelex staff, and to the Insure My Trip staff, to no avail......
As a result, I will NEVER use Insure my Trip or Travelex again, and I have been a loyal customer for over 10 years!

As we all know, the primary goal of any insurance company is not to pay any claim. Therefore policy provisions can be configured to exclude issues which companies know may be more likely to occur. In our recent experience we had a delayed flght due to unavailability of a flight crew for on time departure. This delay caused us to miss our connection for a second flight to meet our cruise ship. This was a situation beyond our countrol

Our airline only had that one flight to the departure destination and their offer was to rebook us for a flight the next day, after the ship had left port. With some research we found another airline that could get us there for the second leg of our planned flight itinerary. We got those tickets and were able to make the ship departure on time.

Our travel insurance refused to accept a claim as any flight delay due to to any reason other than airline personnel strike, weather or mechanical problems was excluded. The crew unavailability caused delay was excluded. If the pilot had dropped dead on the jetway and the flight was cancelled, that too would be excluded. If the airport had been closed due to terrorist threat and flights cancelled, that too would have excluded. Insurance companies know this and therefore construct their polices so that only the very less likely issues would be covered. So, will I use this insurance or recommend this company to others. Definetely not.

Thank you for reaching out to us on InsureMyTrip.com (IMT) regarding your claim situation. Although you wrote this review on March 10, 2017, IMT just recently posted your review on March 31, 2017; therefore this caused a slight delay in our response time.

We are sorry to hear of your frustration. I have contacted the Claims Administrator on your behalf and have been advised that, to date, the completed claim forms have not been received by our claims department. Insurance is highly regulated and in order to confirm coverage, completed claim forms and documentation are an important part of the claim process, in order to validate coverage, as it relates to the specific conditions, as listed in the plan purchased.

The protection plan purchased is a Named Peril Policy meaning the policy outlines the coverage included and if the reason for trip cancellation or trip interruption is not listed, coverage does not apply. The Travel Basic policy you purchased offers 13 different reasons to cancel or interrupt your trip, please see the Description of Coverage for a list of covered reasons on pages 11 & 12. The Description of Coverage that was emailed to you on November 9, 2016 at 9:32am, when the policy was purchased.

In addition, the Claim Administrator has also advised that you were reimbursed by Spirit Airlines for your original airline tickets, but you are seeking reimbursement for the additional airfare. We empathize with your situation, unfortunately, crew rest (or unavailability of a flight crew) is not listed as one of the covered reasons. Having said this, I recommend you email Spirit Airlines for a detailed explanation regarding the reason for the flight delay, Crew Rest. Was the Crew Rest required because of an incoming flight that was delayed due to a weather or mechanical issue?

If this information is incomplete or inaccurate, we require completed claim forms and supporting documentation in order to properly assess the claim and determine liability.

Travelex makes every effort to review all concerns from our clients and we hope this provides clarification on the plan benefits and claims process.

    Kind Regards,

    Travelex Insurance Services, Inc.
Administration, Risk and Compliance Project Manager
Please note: All terms, conditions, exclusions and provisions of the plan apply. All benefits will be determined at the time a claim may occur based on the information and documentation submitted.

Unfortunately after booking our cruise, my arthritic right shoulder became extremely painful causing me to seek medical care and arthroscopic surgery was scheduled weeks later, and we had to cancel our vacation. I contacted CSA and completed all the documents and my physician did as well. Bottom line, because I have had arthritis in my shoulder prior to paying for the insurance (which we purchased ONLY because of fear weather conditions would prohibit travel, we live in WNY), we were NOT reimbursed because it was a pre-existing condition. We have purchased travel insurance from CSA numerous times and this ONE time needing to take advantage of the insurance, it was denied. I (we) never would have booked a vacation if there were any indication this unforeseen circumstance would have evolved. Can you please review and reconsider my claim? Thank you

We’re sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your claim and apologize for not meeting your expectations. We want our customers to choose the correct policy to fit their needs and cannot stress enough that it is important to review the coverage details of our plans via the sample Description of Coverage/Insurance Policy that’s provided at the time of purchase, and contact us at (800) 348-9505 or via email at [email protected] with any additional questions. We have dedicated customer service representatives who can clarify the plan terms and conditions and guide you towards the best coverages. A dedicated claims team member has reviewed your case and while some plans are able to provide coverage for losses resulting from pre-existing medical conditions if certain requirements are met, the plan you purchased is unable to provide coverage for such losses. You should have received a written response to your email address provided with your claim. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please reach out to us at the number or email provided above.

The cruise was cancelled due to Covid. I was originally told that I would be able to roll the insurance over to a new cruise if that happened. Now I am told I have to submit new paperwork for a refund and am being made to jump thru hoops to get my refund and although RCCL has given me time to make a new choice, your company has told me that I hit a deadline. Not happy. From now on I will get my insurance direct from the cruise line I am travelling with. Definitely won't do this again. I challenge you to make things right.

Thank you for your review. Generali Global Assistance has issued the following response:

"We're sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your experience, and for not meeting your expectations. Our goal is to provide a smooth and seamless experience for all of our customers. Unfortunately, as stated in our policy documents, our plans only reimburse for non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. It is important that you review your Description of Coverage, which are available before and after your purchase. We take the claims process very seriously and want our customers to make informed choices when purchasing travel insurance."

Thank you for your feedback. Please see the response from Generali below:

"We're sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your claim and apologize for not meeting your expectations. While the plan you purchased includes a variety of different covered events that can qualify for Trip Cancellation coverage, the plan is unfortunately unable to provide coverage for government imposed travel restrictions. Our records indicate that a voucher for the premium was issued and dedicated team members are on hand to help you with its use. Warning to ALL who buy this plan - READ the details and fine print of the policy very carefully!! This comes from someone who filed a claim and was denied. I bought this plan for a cruise to the Caribbean. I started experiencing neck/shoulder pain the week of my trip. This was new onset by the way! No prior history of neck problems. I sought medical treatment and was diagnosed with a bulging disc in my neck. The doctor recommended that I not travel until I saw a specialist. I saw a specialist and was cleared for travel but had missed 3 out of the 7 nights of my cruise. All I wanted to be reimbursed for was those nights that I missed and the prepaid, non-refundable excursions! I was not trying to scam the system. I had a legitimate medical reason that prevented me from travel. Nationwide Insurance denied my claim stating, "Because your symptoms occurred during the 60-day period immediately prior to the Effective date of your policy, your condition is deemed a Pre-Existing Condition and therefore excluded from coverage." What is the point of purchasing trip insurance if you are not going to cover when a person has to seek medical care and can't go on their trip? They went on to state: "In addition, since the treatment occurred prior to the effective date, the reason for interrupting your trip is not considered Unforeseen and therefore not covered under the Trip Interruption benefit." "Unforeseen means not anticipated or expected." How much more "Unforeseen" can you get than a bulging disc in your neck that occurs within days before your cruise is scheduled? I mention again - NO PRIOR HISTORY of this medical issue. Even the cruise line wouldn't issue a refund because it was within days of the cruise. I would NEVER purchase trip insurance again because basically all it covers is if you have to seek medical attention while on your cruise. And even then, read your policy very carefully!

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. We are sorry to learn that you missed a portion of your trip. We are also sorry to learn of your dissatisfaction with the policy. Based on the details provided in your review, it does appear that your claim was correctly denied. Travel insurance is designed to protect against unforeseen events only, and pre-existing medical conditions are not covered unless you qualify for the pre-existing conditions waiver. We would be happy to explain in further detail with you over the phone at 800-487-4722. In the future, we encourage you to call us to discuss if travel insurance will cover your primary concerns.

A claim was filed on our behalf for a major medical reason involving our daughter. We were told it's not covered and to read the exclusions. It would appear that the exclusions have exclusions. Either way the insurance has no value and the company will find a way to issue a denial. For our money this was a waste .

When we received your comments on October 31st, we assigned your potential claim to an advocate. Based on the information that you provided, our advocate called the Nationwide claims department who confirmed your telephone conversation and pointed out the applicable exclusion in the policy, so no claim was actually filed.

Of course, it is never good news to hear that there is no coverage in your policy for a medical issue. If you would like to call Customer Care to discuss this further, we are available to call at (800) 487-4722 Mondays through Friday from 7:00 AM to midnight and weekends 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. We would be very happy to explain the policy limitations and exclusions further so that you have this information for future travel.

Of all the times I have purchased travel insurance, this was the first time I had to use it and I was very unhappy with Nationwide when they denied our claim. My daughter and I survived the Las Vegas concert mass shooting, but my daughter was still too traumatized and stressed to travel on a plane and be on a crowded cruise ship over Thanksgiving. She had all the supporting documentation from a health care provider but because she wasn't hospitalized for an emotional/psychiatric issue it was not covered! (watch the fine print on exclusions when you purchase insurance). Plus, they took so long to finally deny it that we lost our window to even try to reuse the airfare. It was VERY frustrating to deal with a large insurance company that couldn't consider the extenuating circumstances of being in a mass shooting as cause of cancellation!

Thank you for taking time to submit your Nationwide review.

Although we are very, very sorry that you and your daughter experienced the horror of the Las Vegas attack, we are relieved to hear that neither of you were physically injured. While it is understandable that your daughter was hesitant to board a plane after such an experience, it would still not be a "covered reason" for Trip Cancellation under your policy. As the company explained, your Nationwide policy excluded "...mental or emotional disorders, unless Hospitalized...", as do most travel insurance plans.

Although this was not a satisfactory claim experience since it resulted in a denial of coverage, these circumstances would have been covered under a policy with a "Cancel for Any Reason" rider. In the future, you may decide to revisit purchasing travel insurance including that optional coverage. "Cancel for Any Reason" is available under the Nationwide Choice and Luxury Cruise plans for an additional premium.

Please remember that InsureMyTrip is available for assistance by calling (800) 487-4722 weekdays from 7:00 AM to midnight ET and weekends from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM ET.

While I appreciate your reply, the "cancel for any reason" rider is often not available unless you purchase the insurance right away with initial payment on the trip or at all. I have purchased many travel policies through your site. Since, we don't have all the total costs until we purchase the airfare, hotel if needed, and are sure who is finally going on the trip, it's difficult to purchase the travel insurance right away. Otherwise I would purchase the rider. PLUS, I was told that is not full value but only a portion of the costs (some is better than none but we did not anticipate that the cancellation would be for anything but illness, or the other listed covered reasons on the higher cost plan).

With your policy of not returning funds for a trip that was cancelled months in advance (even before payment was due on the cruise ship) is just a complete rip off.
ESPECIALLY for repeat customers. Be assured you have lost our business and anyone we used to refer to you in the future. The worst customer service I have ever received. I don't even know how you are still in business but I can assure you that from me alone over a lifetime of cruising that you are losing $1,000's of dollars. Now add in our friends and referrals? We all be cruising the Mediterranean this summer and will happily NOT be using YOU. I would say yes to the box below on contacting me but you ignored my request for months to call me back about this issue so I know it is a joke. You don't even have customer service!

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. We are sorry to learn that you were dissatisfied with your experience. The policy premium could not be refunded due to the cancellation request occurring outside of the 10 day review period.

The following excerpt has been taken from the InsureAssist TravCan policy certificate:

"All premium is non-refundable after a 10 day review period."

After reviewing your request to cancel the policy for a refund of premium, the Underwriter stood by the terms and conditions of the policy.

Please call us at 800-487-4722 if you have any questions or concerns.
