Nationwide Mutual Insurance Choice Cruise
We purchased trip insurance that included trip cancellation. What a total waste of time and an obvious twisting of words by Nationwide to avoid paying a claim. This type of result is what gives insurance companies a bad name. I reviewed our policy in detail before filing our claim. Our cruise was cancelled by Holland America back in April due to Covid-19. This is the reply we received from Nationwide.

"Because the Coronavirus/COVID-19 is not one of the named perils listed in the plan, we are unable to consider this to be a covered claim. Regrettably, your claim does not qualify for reimbursement based on this reason"

Following the above statement, Nationwide lists what they do cover.... see below...

The policy you purchased provides the following benefits:

"Quarantine means Your strict isolation imposed by a Government authority or Physician to prevent the spread of disease. An embargo preventing You from entering a country is not a Quarantine"

Do you see the problem here? They are picking and choosing (spinning) what they will cover. The Govt prevented cruising due to the spread of disease, but because their verbiage doesn't specifically say Covid-19, it doesn't qualify.

What a crock of BS! I will be filing a complaint with the department of insurance. I will NEVER purchase travel insurance from Nationwide again. In my opinion, they stole money from me in selling me a policy that was worthless!

You guys covered nothing that was important. You had to be in the hospital in critical condition or dead for your company to pay out anything. The Cronovirus was not covered because of the latest status. What good was it. I just got ripped off over a very poor choice of mine. NEVER AGAIN....

Thank you for your feedback. Generali Global Assistance has offered the following response:

"We’re sorry the coverage didn’t meet your expectation. As stated in our policy documents, our plans only reimburse for non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Generali Global Assistance plans do not offer coverage if you cancel your trip due to fear of traveling due to Coronavirus, unless you added Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage. It is important that you review your Description of Coverage, which are available before and after your purchase. We take the claims process very seriously and want our customers to make informed choices when purchasing travel insurance."

For any additional questions, please contact InsureMyTrip at 800-487-4722 where a licensed representative would be happy to provide you assistance.

Thank you for your review. Please see the following response from Trawick International.

"We at Trawick International hope all is well with you and you had a wonderful trip. We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with our plan. Our policy clearly states that the required COVID-19 test by CDC to reenter the United States would not be covered under the plan you purchased."

I wouldn't buy Nationwide Travel Insurance again. Terrible customer service, almost no communication with me, you are in the dark when you submit a claim. Took 4 days, 2 emails, and a phone call to figure out how to submit a claim--they apparently want to make it as hard a possible. And they need every documentation under the sun for your claim submission, so SAVE EVERY piece of paperwork, boarding passes, itinerary and receipts. After submitting the claim I never heard from them until I received a check 7 weeks later. We had a major trip delay and discovered after the fact that our Trip Delay Coverage doesn't actually cover trip delays--just expenses occurred during a trip delay. I'll read the fine print before buying any insurance next time.

C&F Travel Insured International Worldwide Trip Protector
I thought I had purchased a "Cancel for any Reason" package. Because I have a daughter that gets sick a lot, and other various concerns, I needed that package. The day of our trip, a hurricane watch went into effect in NY where we had a plane transfer. After unsuccessfully searching for other options as a transfer point, I cancelled the trip. Later I learned that I did NOT have "Cancel for any Reason" coverage. We scrambled to reschedule our trip for the next day. The coverage did nothing for me.

Thank you for your review for this C&F Travel Insured plan. Your comments provide us with another opportunity to discuss the Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage.

CFAR is an optional coverage available in some plans. As you found out when you tried to report your claim, your C&F Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector did not include CFAR. In order to have that coverage through C&F Travel Insured, you would have had to purchase the C&F Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector Plus plan at a higher premium. Generally CFAR increases a policy premium from 45% to 55% depending on the plan.

Unfortunately many travelers purchasing travel insurance believe that Trip Cancellation, which allows you to cancel your trip prior to departure, is synonymous with CFAR. Trip Cancellation, which is available in only Comprehensive Coverage plans, allows you to cancel a trip for a "covered reason" as listed in each plan. These covered reasons may vary between plans and states so it is always best to review those covered reasons. Of course, the number one and two covered reasons in Comprehensive plans are usually the unexpected sickness, accidental injury or death of you, your traveling companion, and family member. However, CFAR would have allowed you to cancel your trip for "other than a covered reason".

We welcome you to call us when quoting for our assistance. We would be very happy to review your options along with the conditions of coverage.

Generali Global Assistance Preferred
This review points out the poor coverage of most policies on the market today. Insurance coverage has to be rated upon the actual care, concern and paid coverage in the event of a major health event . Imagine getting stranded in a 3rd world country and subjected to long term lower quality health care because an insurance company employee decides the care is “adequate. This policy, like most others, has inadequate coverage requirements for evacuation/repatriation. It is unreasonable not to cover for return to home venue rather than closest facility. Also unreasonable not to take into consideration the best medical care available rather than merely “adequate”`.
The cost of coverage for a 6 day trip was excessive.

Thank you very much for taking the time to complete this review. Travel insurance plans and premium are determined by each state's insurance department. Premiums are generally based on the age of the traveler, trip cost and length of trip.

Travel insurance providers, who maintain large databases of skilled medical providers and transportation firms, are skilled at handling these types of emergency medical situations. The providers' 24 hour emergency assistance centers are staffed with highly trained individuals who can handle language translation and are trained to ensure that escorts and the appropriate medical equipment are on board. They will coordinate with the host country, local authorities, and the traveler’s physician to determine the best and safest method of transportation as well as managing payment and timing of services. The 24 hr assistance also keeps in touch with family members advising them of the schedule and the traveler's progress in getting back home which includes handling immigration documentation, flight clearances, coordinating ground transportation as well as entry to an appropriate medical facility.

I tried to use the insurance to help get money and not a credit for my flight back from Turks and Caicos since we canceled our trip due to the Hurricane since our resort is closed until next month and I could not use the insurance due to it being purchased after the hurricane was announced. I was not aware when I purchased the insurance that we could not use it for this reason. I would have never wasted almost $100 purchasing the insurance. Since the resort themselves closed and this was out of our control I thought the insurance would cover this but I did not research close enough I guess before getting the insurance. When I called she was very polite and explained the reason behind it.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. We are sorry to learn that you were unable to travel. We hope that fellow customers find your review and our reply educational.

In order to find hurricane specific coverage, you must purchase the policy prior to when a storm is named. Once a storm has been named it is considered a foreseen event.

This is standard for all travel insurance plans. In the future, please consider calling us prior to purchase to discuss the plan exclusions. We strongly recommend customers read the terms and conditions of the policy within the review period to determine if the policy fits your needs. If the policy does not fit your needs, it can be cancelled within the review period for a refund of premium. Please call us at 800-487-4722 if you have any questions or concerns.

Very expensive. Not sure why my Medicare wouldn’t cover the hospitals if we got Covid. Crazy to pay 563 for both of us.
