I've been using HCC for years. In August I finally had an accident that required a 3-day hospital visit. I had to pay out of pocket almost $3,000 and its now 60 days after my accident and I have not been reimbursed. The company has given me no updates or time frame for this. My accident and treatment were very standard and clearly fall within the guidelines of coverage. It shouldn't take an underwriter more than an hour to see this and approve it.

I can no longer recommend HCC - they are the cheapest so I guess you get what you pay for. I will pay more in the future for a more responsive plan. As a Yoga Teacher, $3000 is a lot of money which I needed to borrow- I thought the entire point of insurance was to be covered when you have an accident....

I am frustrated that people give them such high reviews. Reviews from people who did not file claims aren't an accurate assessment of the company.

UPDATE: As of 11/29 I have not been reimbursed. I was told that my claim was closed because I did send a from that my hospital sent to them on the day of my accident.The front-line reps are very uninformed- many contradicting each other. The last guy told me it was a bad idea to pay my claim myself (I had to to get my passport back from the hospital), which was exactly the advice I received from HCC several months ago.

When an InsureMyTrip rep contacted them directly it was discovered that 2 pieces of paper were 'stuck' together and they would reopen my claim. Very unprofessional.

UPDATE Feb 2 2016

I finally received my claim check. I was reimbursed for the total amount of my claim, minus a deductible and small fee for the exchange rate.

I'm happy about this, however still unhappy about the 5 months it took to be paid. The company sent 4 checks to me that never arrived and after a number of phone calls they finally UPS'd one to me. How can 4 checks get lost in the mail?

Anyway, look elsewhere. I'm currently using IMG Global as they were very responsive to my questions about their policy, however I have not had to file a claim yet.

Travelex Travel Basic
Was a total waste of money. Was in Asia for a month and the cost to visit a state of the art hospital in Thailand was under $25.00 including the prescription for a UTI, one of my friends had to go so I know. My travel plan cost me $116.00 for 30 days. Best to find out what medical is like in the countries your visiting before springing for travel insurance.

    Thank you for taking the time to post about your concerns on Insure My Trip. The Travelex Basic policy that you purchased has multiple benefits in addition to the medical coverage, such as Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, Baggage, and more. Which you were also eligible for while you were on your trip. While we are happy to hear that everything was taken care of for your trip to the hospital and that your expenses were minimal, there are many times where insured’s experience a covered event that is above and beyond what they can reasonably afford while traveling. Thank you again and we hope you think of Travelex the next time you travel.

    Kind Regards,

Honestly, I did want to use this plan at one point early on. I was at the gym and pretty sure I broke my pinky finger. But when I tried to call to check in before going to the hospital, the automated system said I would have to wait 20 mins on hold! I tried calling the next day and 15 mins. So I figured all they will do at the hospital anyways is xray it and that's it. So I ended up not going to the hospital. And wasting my money on this policy.

AIG Travel Travel Guard Gold
The two times I contacted for coverage I was told it was not covered. Missing a plane and extending my coverage time frame. I don’t see the benefit you offer. I would not recommend your company.

    Thank you for submitting your comments. As you were advised by AIG, you can only extend a comprehensive plan prior to your departure date. In addition, we can certainly understand your disappointment when AIG advised you that there was no coverage for your missed flight. However, all comprehensive plans including your AIG Travel Guard Gold plan are "named peril" policies that would only reimburse you for specific covered reasons that are listed in the policy.

    For example, why did you miss your flight? Your policy would provide coverage for Travel Delay but only if you were delayed more than five consecutive days for the following reasons:
    "(a) the Insured being involved in or delayed due to a traffic
    accident while en route to a departure as substantiated by a police report;
    (b) Common Carrier delay;
    (c) the Insured’s or Traveling Companion’s lost or stolen
    passports, travel documents or money;
    (d) reasons listed under Trip Cancellation and Interruption."

    We regret that you are not pleased with this purchase. Nevertheless we do hope that you will consider calling InsureMyTrip customer care in the future for assistance in quoting and purchasing a policy. We are available weekdays from 7:00 am to midnight ET and weekends from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm ET.

This is the insurance you wouldn't want to get if you are traveling/backpacking overseas. I had to submit my insurance claim forms 3 times through their various customer portal(s) I was given at the time by different customer service reps. They said they hadn't received the forms every time I checked in and I resubmitted and waited till I contacted again. They asked me to wait 30 days at the end of each call, which ended up waiting for 3 months while they were not processing anything. Since I am traveling overseas (hence the travel insurance) I also submitted a wire transfer form so I didn't get paid via check.
Of course when I reached out again, they said they did not receive my wire transfer form and they mailed a check. Several chats and almost 3 months later I got two wire transfers with the help of Insuremytrip rep.
As far as I understood, they were going through a change in their electronic system therefore their service portal was useless. I needed to repeat myself again and again to a new rep in the middle of my travels in Asia.
I would not recommend this insurance to travelers. There are much modern and efficient insurance companies out there.

HCC website is like a labyrint, old-fashioned like back in the nineties. Submitting a claim is a pain in the a** and they take the "reasonable" time of one month to process it, not to say that you need to send a separate form to receive a wire transfer instead of a check. Hey, if you didn't notice, we're in year 2017.... please do something about it. Definitely I will never use their service again. I'm a traveller and I need fast and easy process, not to make several international phone call and receive a different answer every time.

Update 17/9/17
Insuremytrip replied to my comment offering support. After more than one month with not even an reply from HCC, I wrote to Insuremytrip's support. Do you think someone came back to me?

    Thank you for your feedback on the policy.

    The Global Underwriters Diplomat International plan covers medical expenses up to a maximum of 20,000 USD due to a sudden and unforeseen recurrence of a Pre-existing Condition. This does not include coverage for known, scheduled, required or expected medical care, drugs, or treatments existent or necessary prior to the effective date of coverage. Otherwise, the plan excludes coverage for pre-existing medical conditions in a 12 month period prior to the effective date of coverage. This exclusion does not apply to Emergency Evacuation/Repatriation.

    The best way to waive the pre-existing conditions exclusion is to purchase a Comprehensive travel insurance plan immediately after you put money down towards your trip. Most policies will offer a waiver of pre-existing conditions if you satisfy the following requirements: purchase the policy within 10 to 21 days after making the initial trip payment; insure 100% of the prepaid non-refundable expenses prior to your departure date; and be medically fit to travel the day you purchase the policy.

    Please call us at 800-487-4722 if you would like to learn more about obtaining coverage for pre-existing conditions.

    Thank you for your feedback on the policy. The CSA Travel Protection Custom plan is a solid, comprehensive plan with an extensive list of covered events for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Travel Delay.

    For a valid medical claim CSA Travel Protection requires all bills and reports for medical and/or dental expenses claimed, any requested information related to the claimed expense(s), including but not limited to, an explanation of benefits from any other applicable insurance, and a signed patient authorization to release any information required by us, to investigate your claim.

    The large majority of travel insurance providers offer excess or secondary insurance. However, we do have several plans which are primary. In the future, please give us a call at 800-487-4722 so that we can assist you in selecting a plan that best suits your needs.

TravelSafe Classic
The plan has too many caveats and exclusions. We have used this firm for previous trips and vacations. Unfortunately the contract is written to exclude missed scheduled tours when the time to be cleared through customs and immigrations into UAE is longer than they consider acceptable. The air carrier landed on time. It was 45 minutes before economy passengers were deplaned. Luggage claim and immigrations required 2 hours. The contract excludes any missed tours unless the air carrier is 3 hours late.
Read the fine print.
