we deliberately bought a plan in case of trip interruption but when we almost missed our connection due to a strike by Air France Traffic Control we found in the small print - that we had not seen in the summary at time of purchase online - that the $5000 coverage we thought we had only applied in the case of the death of a relative or our house burning down!!!!!!! ridiculous!!!! not at all what is normally understood by trip interruption. Next time I will call a broker and go through what is available line by line. I no longer trust your summaries and am just grateful that we managed to make our connection.

Thank you for your review and feedback. Typically package policies offer more reasons under trip interruption coverage than medical policies. In the future, please feel free to contact us as we can review your concerns and trip details with you, and then recommend a policy that best fits those specifics.

TravelSafe Classic Plus
Very disappointing. I filed a claim and the company worked hard to not reimburse us despite the fact that it was a legitimate claim; very frustrating. I needed a lawyer and two appeals to get a fair reimbursement.

C&F Travel Insured International Worldwide Trip Protector
I did have medical treatment while in France, but the paperwork required to file a claim With Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector was enormous and I was required to file a claim with my primary medical insurance first. I decided that my time was worth more than than the time required to file a claim.

The word "secondary" is highlighted in red lettering in the policy overview section prior to purchase. Clicking on this word "secondary" defines what secondary coverage means. The Worldwide Trip Protector Plus at a higher premium, your coverage would have been "primary."

HTH Worldwide TravelGap Excursion
I ended up in a hospital with a broken back after a ski accident, and at first the advice nurse they got me in contact with was great. But then when it came time to try to get HTH to provide evidence of insurance, they refused because I had purchased the policy while not in the US (there's a clause that says insurance must be purchased before the trip begins -- I didn't interpret that as "any time you leave the US you're beginning a single trip that lasts until you get back"). While I was in the hospital, they basically shut down any appeal by saying "you can't appeal until you've filed a claim, which we'll reject". In the end, my US insurance gave me pretty good coverage, so I was OK, but it drives me crazy that they'd use the IP address of the computer I was on when I purchased the policy to deny me coverage, but *not* to prevent me from buying the useless policy!

There are a number of important factors related to “when and where” HTH Worldwide issues our insurance policies.

Firstly, TravelGap Excursion is available to U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents traveling outside of the United States. The plan is available for customers purchasing in approved U.S. states. HTH Worldwide does not hold licenses to sell insurance products outside of the United States. As such, in certain circumstances it can be a violation of foreign insurance law to issue a policy when a customer is already overseas.

Secondly, TravelGap Excursion is unique because it covers pre-existing medical conditions up to the policy maximum.. In order to offer such comprehensive benefits, it is important that customers buy the insurance prior to trip departure. If HTH were not to enforce this requirement, we could be adversely selected against. Some travelers could potentially wait until they became sick or injured before they purchased a plan.

Finally, HTH Worldwide offers a refund of premium for customers who are ineligible for TravelGap Excursion. If you have not received a refund, please contact HTH Worldwide.

Did not use the plan. Have to use any current insurance coverage first. Would like to know just how much these companies pay out per dollar of premium collected. Just think the costs are unnecessarily high.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. InsureandGo has issued the following reply:

“Thank you for your review. Our records indicate that you did not file a claim with us. Our Global plans provide for primary coverage. If you feel that you have a valid claim, please contact us.”

The InsureandGo Global plans are designed for international travel, and as result, offer primary medical coverage. InsureandGo plans for domestic travel, provide benefits that are secondary to your insurance in the United States.

Please call us at at 800-487-4722 if you have any questions regarding primary versus secondary coverage, or if you would like to obtain a quote for primary travel insurance.

Generali Global Assistance Standard
At first I thought it was a misunderstanding that would be remedied once we discussed the matter. My wife and I planned to take family members on a trip to France. We undertook to pay for lodging and train travel in Europe. They would only have to pay for air fare and incidentals. And for one cousin who is celebrating a significant birthday this year, we went a step farther and undertook to pay her air fare from SFO to Paris. Knowing how much we were likely to spend for all of this we insured the trip for $9,500.

Shortly before the trip my wife was injured and hospitalized. The trip was cancelled and we filed a claim for trip cancellation coverage. Generali reimbursed us for all of the payments we made that were non-refundable (including payments for train tickets for our party of six, multiple hotel rooms for all of us, and a house rental in Brittany). But it declined to compensate us for the air fare we paid for my cousin because, they said, she wasn't an insured party.

I communicated with Generali and explained what I believe is self-evident. The risk I insured against was the risk of losing up to $9,500 is payments I made for my trip and Generali's policy provided that "Benefits will be paid, up to the amount in the Schedule, for...Payments that you paid for your Trip." I wasn't claiming benefits for my cousin. She didn't make any payments for air fare and had no risk of losing any such payments so even if she had been insured she would not have been able to claim benefits for lost air travel payments. I was claiming the benefit for my wife and me since we were the ones who paid the $1,800 in air fare, faced the risk of loss of that payment if the trip was cancelled, and were the parties Generali agreed to insure against that very risk.

After failing to get anywhere by communicating with Generali in writing, I was finally able to speak with a Claims Manager by phone. I explained my logic and she agreed, my reasoning was sound! Nevertheless, she insisted "that's not how the policy works" and refused to consider the matter further. She asserted that Generali only pays benefits for reservations that are in the name of an insured, even if an insured party paid for the reservation. (As for the benefit for payments I made for train tickets for six passengers, that was "a mistake" she said.)

I'm now persuaded that this is not a simple misunderstanding but a deliberate policy or practice that amounts to an intentional breach of contract by Generali. I intend to pursue the matter further and am confident I will eventually succeed in getting Generali to live up to its commitment. However, others should be very cautious about dealing with Generali.

AIG Travel Travel Guard Basic
This is an update of a previous review. My claim has been approved and should be paid within 10 days. I think the process could have been simpler. I had a previous claim several years ago that was handled much more expeditiously. I will not use AIG again.
