I have used Global Alert in the past for other trips over the past few years, two of which I had to cancel. I was, frankly, surprised at how smoothly and efficiently they handled both of my claims when I had to cancel. I intend to use them again.

We are independent travelers. We usually buy trip insurance when we make the first purchase, which is often the air fare. We then add to the coverage as expenses increase for accommodations, train tickets, tours etc. With some companies, that is easy to do online. Global Alert, however, cannot handle these additions either online or with a simple phone call. It requires calling to get an email address or fax number and then a multiple step process to exchange information. We will need to go through this process several times before we are done planning the trip. I wish that we had spent more and selected a company that provides better customer service.

Fortunately, I didn't have to use the plan but it seemed to cover what I needed to be covered to feel comfortable in my travels in the UK and in Italy.

I had to cancel trip to UK unexpectedly. Cancel for any reason plan allowed for nearly full refund. Everyone who I spoke with was very courteous and professional and the process was surprisingly simple. Will be using for all future trips.

A major shortcoming in this policy is that the premium is non-refundable if the related cruise / travel plans are cancelled prior to the penalty period. That is, if coverage is purchased for a trip 270 days in the future and the trip is cancelled 180 days in the future with no penalty cost, the insurance should be refundable, less a small service charge, because the insurer has not provided any coverage during a risk period, that is there has been no exposure to loss.

Clark Howard recommended using InsureMyTrip.com. I did so and found many, many options for trip insurance. The policy I chose met my needs and was reasonably priced. I did not file a claim so I have no opinion about that.
