Trip insurance, like most insurance, is philosophical. We had a bit invested in our trip and knew that cancellation would cost us everything we had spent. Any time we spend over a certain amount we can't afford to lose, we add insurance. We don't want to cancel a trip and not be able to afford rescheduling it. It is worth the extra cost for us.

On our cruise our baggage was delayed 5 days. Then coming home we missed our connection because the first flight was late. It was extremely stressful and having to keep up with the documentation added to that. But when we returned home I pulled up and carefully followed the instructions. It is a lot of work and very time consuming process. I have so far only completed the delayed baggage claim because our expenses were significant. I haven't filed the claim for the missed connection because the cost to us was around $100. I'm not sure it's worth my time to pursue. The claim process requires me contact the airline and request them write a letter explaining how and why the delay occurred. That is the most time consuming requirement among the others. I hope the claim for the delayed baggage is processed without difficulty. I will update the review if allowed. The cost of the insurance was $850 and our expenses were $2000. But the time and stress involved will require the claim process to go smoothly for it to be feasible for me to purchase insurance in the future.

The insurance did pay some amount, they disallowed some valid expenses and it just wasn't worth fighting them over it.

I learned during this trip's insurance purpose that these plans are less useful for the non-medical aspects of a trip. It became clear to me that these plans are targeted more to folks that pay all costs and have no option of receiving a refund ONLY as of the day prior to your trip's departure.

For example, on our most recent 23 day trip one of our B&Bs would not give refunds after we were only four days into our trip and most other B&Bs would not give refunds only a few days prior to our first night's stay. According the person we spoke to at Insuremytrip there were no CSA or other companys' policies that would cover that situation since it was still refundable as of the day we left for our trip. So if we would have had to return home suddenly after five days into our trip, we would have lost the money for the B&B that needed 3 weeks notice for a full refund. In addition if both of us on this policy would have been incapacitated and unable to cancel all the other B&Bs that had better refund policies (say 2 or 3 days before our stay at them), we would still have to pay those B&Bs.

SO BE FOREWARNED: CSA and other companies will NOT pay unless it was prepaid and non-refundable the day before leaving on your trip. Perhaps the chances of this happening are low but it makes it more difficult to determine the amount of insurance to purchase...I had to file an amendment several times as I further planned the B+Bs for our trip. The travel part of the insurance seems to cater to the fully up front funded vacation via a third party. Wouldn't they have formulas to determine that risk an just fully cover all costs if something should happen during the trip?

That said the medical part of the policy is worth it. We didn't use it during this trip but we had to during a previous trip and were very satisfied.

I was trying to buy premises coverage for a vacation rental apartment, but the site gave me trip insurance instead, and then told me my request for the premises coverage could not go through.

CSA is one of our providers who supply this coverage to us. It is possible that CSA provides Liability coverage for rentals, however since our site is not geared towards this type of coverage, you would have to purchase this directly with CSA.

I have bought several policies over many years and never had a claim. Recently I had to cancel a cruise due to medical reasons. CSA handled the claim very efficiently (although somewhat slow) and paid me for my entire loss.
