We didn't need to file a claim, but felt good knowing that we had the policy. We needed it mostly for the medical insurance but the coverage for trip cancellation and other airline related delays gave us some peace of mind. Worth it.

We had purchased a policy through InsureMyTrip with Nationwide. A week before our cruise we experienced a family emergency that would prevent us from going on the cruise. I contacted the cruise line and airlines. They all let us rebook for a later time. I then contacted Nationwide, they told us they would not refund but would transfer the policy. We said that was acceptable and sent them the information they had requested. Two week later I had heard nothing so I contacted again. We were told they had not received our info. So I resent. That was the last I have heard from Nationwide.

Its not worth being upset about so we have moved on. But I do find it to be very interesting that the only "issue" we had with canceling was with the company we had purchased a policy from to prevent any "issues". We plan to continue purchasing policies through InsureMyTrip, but with some other carrier.

The coverage was OK but we were tripped up by the small print. READ IT. READ IT, READ IT, BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER TRAVEL. In middle of trip to Europe one of our party (all vaccinated and boosted) contracted mild Covid. CDC and local health recommendations stated "if you test positive on a lateral flow test but do not feel very ill, self isolate to protect yourself and others and do not travel or mix closely with people in public places until you have most likely cleared the infection, 5 days later, or subsequent tests prove negative. Unless you feel very ill, there is no need to see a doctor". We followed this official advice, canceled one flight and rebooked another for later as well as incurred hotel and other expenses. Assumed this would be covered by Trip Interruption protection. It was not. Despite what official sources say, the insurance policy required a doctor's visit (easy getting an appointment in a pandemic, huh?), a PCR test and an official letter from the doctor advising you not to travel. We did not do this and it cost us about six hundred dollars in change fees, hotel and incidentals. This simply underscores why you should always read the policy carefully to make sure in an emergency you are complying 100% with the policy's terms; common sense is not a substitute for rigid compliance. After a phone call to the claims department I concluded that filing a claim was simply a waste of time . Note: I don't think this is specific to Nationwide.

Didn’t need it but when it looked like we might miss our connection, we were not concerned knowing we would be covered for an unplanned overnight stay.

We didn’t need to take advantage of the insurance which was good. But it was a comfort to know we had it. Would definitely take advantage of it again.

Customer service told me I needed a medical letter stating certain items. When I went to file the claim, there was a specific medical form that needed to be filled out. So the person had to go back to the doctor for that. The expected time to even have the claim looked at was 30 days. I called after two weeks to make sure all was rolling along. She said that she couldn't escalate it until 30 days had passed. Then 5 days later the check for the entire amount of the trip that was cancelled showed up! So a view glitches but getting full recovery of trip payment was the goal. Accomplished!

Since we did not have to use it, it’s hard to say. We did compare a few companies though the this seemed to have the best coverage for the best rate.

The reason for the one m 4 not 5 star is that the cancel for any reason was voided if insurance not purchased within 14 days of booking trip which you don't really know til after the fact. I think that is an incredibly short window for a trip booked almost a year out. Especially when you did not book flights yet so I had to guestimate that expense. It was THE main reason I went with NW only to lose that coverage by just a day. If I use again I will just be sure to get insurance right away. Other than that it is a very comprehensive plan, especially with the any reason cancel and had some good extras related to bringing my pet and damage to rental. It covered all the bases well.
