Comprehensive plans offer the most benefits, including Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption. These plans provide the best protection for the investment you have made in your trip.
After spending a lot of money for this insurance coverage, when we cancelled our trip due to the terrorist act and then war in Israel, our claim was completely denied as war is not a covered reason.

This plan though purchased within the time frame of cancel for any reason interruption did not provide coverage for a year’s later health claim possibilities because there is no coverage for wars. I got back my 75% cancellation of unrefundable costs but was told that the additionally paid for health coverages because of the outbreak of “war”. Shouldn’t I get a partial refund as there was no coverage?

The plan denied my claim for cancellation coverage due to terrorist attack in Israel. The insurance company used a single small clause in the policy to deny my claim. The clause states that a terrorist attack claim will only be allowed if the attack occurs within 30 days of the planned trip. Our trip was planned for 12/9/2023 and the terrorist attack on Israel was 10/7/2023. Not within the 30 day window and claim denied. This is not right and not what should be expected from decent travel insurance company under such extreme and unexpected circumstances.

The biggest drawback to this plan is that practically speaking it is worthless when facing terrorism or threats from conflicts. There is no cancellation coverage until the State Department applies a “Level 4 Do Not Travel” rating, which they are not likely to do in many cases for diplomatic reasons, or until there is a terrorism incident within 30 days of your travel to a city on your itinerary. For example, even now, Israel is not rated at level 4, even with an ongoing conflict. So, you have to depend on your travel company to cancel the trip voluntarily and give you a refund. Also, bear in mind that many incidents that are terroristic are not labeled as such by our government for various reasons. They do not rate countries or classify behaviors with the safety of citizens as their first priority. Rather, they make ratings and designations for political or diplomatic reasons. This means that criteria such as these are not useful for determining if it is safe or psychologically comfortable to travel. In short, be aware you are unlikely to be able to alter you travel plans for these reasons, even when conditions are risky.

The claim was filed October 25th with 9 attachments, I received an email asking for more information Nov 12th, which i responded to Nov 13th with 4 more attached documents, and got an confirmation email. Since i never heard anything again and the website only shows "RECEIVED" I called on Dec 7th. In the call I was told they sent me an email asking for more information, so i informed them i had responded the following day. She put me on hold and said i would receive a call in 20 minutes to finish up the claim. No call back. I called again with similar results, (being told i would get a call by end of day) on Dec 14th, 15th, 18th, 20th and 27th. Still nothing...they have all said, "I've upgraded your claim to priority and sent it directly to the manager." Now I'm being told they have a 2 week re-review period and I'll receive an email.
DO NOT purchase a plan from Nationwide if there is any chance you might actually use it.
My claim isn't even much, about $400 on a plan that cost $163.
