The Plan, for what it was, appeared reasonable. In the end, no one wants to ever have to use such a Plan -- because that means there was a nightmare with luggage, or a flight, or a medical issue...none of which any of us want to occur.
I did read a review where someone 'lost' a watch and it was replaced. I was encouraged, as my cell phone was stolen on the trip (and not out of the hotel room, or out of the car -- but literally right out of my wife's hands!) -- but when I read the policy, there on the 'Exclusions' list was #20 = cell phones...no payment for any loss or damage. So, I will admit that was disappointing. There were other exclusions that I acknowledge I did not read before I purchased the policy -- but who knows what to anticipate, especially if we are not experienced travelers!
I presume that if any of the horrible events had occurred, for which I did purchase the insurance, there would have been appropriate coverage and response by the company...I am glad none of them did.

My trip went smoothly and I did not need to make a claim against the insurance. I was glad I called to get information from an agent because I had overlooked the Academic Explorer policy and it was less expensive than some of the other insurance that I was considering. The agent pointed out that since the insured was a student my medical insurance was the primary coverage and the travel insurance was a secondary that would cover the difference between my insurance and the acutal expenses had there been any.

This is the first time we have ever purchased trip cancellation insurance, and we're so glad we did. We had to cancel our entire trip two days before departure because of an unexpected medical issue. Customer service was very helpful. We appreciated being able to submit the claim forms as a PDF by email. We received a check for full reimbursement about 15 business days after claim submission, with no hassle. Fully satisfied.

You will be very pleased to hear that the John Hancock claims department issued and mailed your check on April 14, 2017, so you should soon be receiving payment. Most insurance companies request that claimants allow up to 30 days after they receive your paperwork to review and process a claim. John Hancock claims department makes every effort to streamline their claims processing which enabled them to settle your check within only 22 days.Apr 17,2017

Although it is true that your plan was certainly not one of the least expensive plans offered to you, the CSA Travel Protection Custom Luxe was one of only two plans that offered coverage for Pre-existing Medical Conditions. Most Comprehensive plans would have provided the Pre-existing Condition Waiver only if you purchased the plan within 10 to 30 days of your Initial Trip Payment. Unfortunately you were more than one month after that first payment when you called. Keep in mind too that you also purchased a plan that was rich in benefit limits since it included $250,000 in Medical (secondary) and $1,000,000 in Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage per person.
Our recommendation is to call us at 800-487-4722 within 10 days of your first payment for the most competitive pricing.Feb 10,2017

Silly me. I thought my $460 purchase would cover the flight cancellation resulting in the loss of pre-paid, non-refundable costs for hotel and tours for my covered trip. But, the cancellation was mechanical and not a "named hurricane" (in CA?). My fault for not reading the policy carefully...so buyer beware.

Thank you for your feedback on the policy. AIG Travel has issued the following response:
"We are sorry to learn of your frustration. The description of coverage for the plan purchased mentions “covered perils†but unfortunately a mechanical malfunction on a plane is not listed as a coverable peril. We are sorry that our response could not be more favorable to you.

I bought "Cancel for Any Reason" which should be a no brainer for them! Nada-nothing-just stalling and delays.22 days out.
