I feel safer knowing I have the extra insurance. I have gotten many plans over the years and have only had to file one claim. I mostly cruise so that is what I insure. It a piece of mind.

We (fortunately) didn't have a claim - but the plan was reasonably priced and the peace-of-mind, knowing we had insurance, was beneficial. I'd use them again.

If a trip cancels, there is no insurance claim, it takes an act of God and much time and correspondences to get either a future voucher or refund. You can get a policy almost instantly, but to cancel and get any kind of a refund back can be problematic.
Update: After a month since cancelling and more follow up, got a voucher for a future insurance purchase from the insurance carrier. Good outcome, but now locked in with a particular carrier in order to use the voucher.

My cruise was shortened by 3 nights prior to sailing. I provided the documentation and the insurance company refunded the prorated amount.
I did not need to file a claim so cannot speak to that.

I have been a customer of insuremytrip.com for more than a decade, they compare different rates with different insurance providers. I have mostly purchased insurance from Travelex through insuremytrip.com, here they act as a broker on behalf of different insurance providers. As a worldwide traveler I find that travel insurance is helpful when you travel internationally. Most of the time when I file a claim it is for medical assistance. Depending on where you go, the medical costs may be far less than here in the US. Unless you are seriously injured or ill and require hospitalization, it might be easier not to file a claim, especially in places where medical costs are extremely nominal even without local insurance. Unless you are admitted to the hospital you must pay out of pocket then file a claim for reimbursement. I have found this process oftentimes very cumbersome, as you have to fill out multiple pages of forms to submit a claim and be successfully reimbursed. At the same time, I do recommend those international travelers to definitely have the insurance, because in addition to medical assistance, it also helps with flight delay and loss of luggage etc. Review the Terms & Conditions carefully, as they may not cover storms that have already been announced or other exclusions. The insurance Only covers unforeseeable problems.

I contacted a representative because I had a concern that could have bound me over in Mexico for a couple more days. I learned that hotel accommodations were not covered by the policy, although it stated they were when I purchased the coverage. I will not be using BHT again, due to this false advertisement.

Thank you for your feedback. Berkshire Hathaway has provide the following response:
After reviewing this a little further, depending on the reason for staying a few extra days, some lodging expenses may have coverage. I cannot guarantee but the language in the plan states:
If Your Trip is delayed at least 5 consecutive hours from the original departure time and prevents You from reaching Your intended Destination the Company will reimburse you for only one delay per Insured, per Trip, up to the Maximum Limit shown in the Schedule. The Trip Delay benefit will cover Reasonable Additional Expenses until travel becomes possible to the originally scheduled Destination, as a result of a cancellation or delay Your Trip for one of the following Unforeseen events:
(a) Common Carrier delay;
(b) You or a Traveling Companion have lost or had stolen, your passports, travel documents, or money;
(c) reasons listed under Trip Cancellation and Interruption.
I Purchased this plan, and then had an emergency so I was not able to use it. I never received even an email from anybody about my purchase. I begin to worry that maybe I didn’t purchase it after all. I had to search my bank account to confirm that I had travel insurance. Made it very very hard to make the call. I couldn’t even remember what insurer I used Thanks for telling me it was Berkshire Hathaway I couldn’t even get that figured out! Not only that I called to work this out and you guys don’t even have weekend hours? So lame. Super unhappy Can’t really comment on the plan couldn’t use it. But I will be commenting right here on insure my trip. Boo.
