Thankfully, I didn't have to file a claim but I appreciated knowing that I had coverage should I need it.

I have travelled extensively and have always bought travel insurance but this is the first time I have filed a claim. My flight to India was canceled and delayed for 24 hours. Since I had a non refundable hotel and scheduled pre paid tours for my original arrival date, I called the airline and requested that I be booked on a flight a day earlier instead of a day later. I filed a claim for the extra nights hotel and my claim was denied. If I would have stayed with the later flight, the claim would have been for more since they would have had to reimburse me not only for hotel but for the pre paid tour as well. That is why I carry insurance for when the unexpected happens. This was a situation beyond my control and I tried to make the best decision but Travel Safe was not willing to work with me.

    Thank you very much for taking the time to comment on your claim.

    Although it is never pleasant to hear that your claim was denied, this was a fair denial of coverage according to your policy terms.

    (1) According to page 1 of your TravelSafe certificate, "Travel Delay: Coverage begins after You have traveled 50 miles or more from home en route to join Your Trip. This is Your “Effective Date” and time for Travel Delay." Since you changed your departure date back on 09/13/2017, which was before your original departure date of 09/22/2017 and before you traveled 50 miles or more from home, you would not have a valid Travel Delay claim under this policy.

    (2) You also indicated in a previous email that "No charge fees or penalties have been incurred. There are no claims or pending claims at this time." Voluntarily changing your departure date prior to departure and incurring the expense of an additional night in a hotel would not qualify under this policy as reasonable expenses for additional accommodations according to page 5 of the certificate:

    "TRAVEL DELAY
    Benefits will be paid up to 0 per day for reasonable accommodation, meal, and local transportation expenses incurred by You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Confirmation of Benefits, if You are delayed for 6 hours or more while en route to or from, or during Your Trip..."

Didn't have to file any sort of claim, but the plan covered most of what I needed including en route trip problems.

I had to file a claim, as our entire cruise and flights were canceled due to the hurricanes that hit Texas in the summer of 2017. The initial response with the insurance company was excellent, then it became more and more slower. Unfortunately I had to call them back two times to ask about the status of my claim, as it was 'under review/pending' for nearly 2 1/2 months. After the second time I called asking a status check, I was able to untimely get my claim settled; I was reimburse 100% of what I asked for, so for that, I give them 5 stars. 3.5 stars for their slow responses, but with all the insurance claims being processed, I suppose I understand. Overall, satisfied, but a slower claim waiting time. I would use again.

It took several months to get my claim resolved. They finally did pay for the requested Deposit of $337.50, but the hoops we had to jump through to get that small amount was not a pleasant experience. I had to either be on the phone or copying paperwork that took up a lot of my work-time. I finally had to get Trip Mate, who I originally bought it through, to be the middle-man that prompted the refund.

Great price for disaster removal coverage on trip to Antarctica - although not used, peace of mind was well worth the $50!

Plan was exceptional, and the reason it was exceptional is that I did not need to use it. Have a great time and had peace of mind prior to, and during, that things were covered in case of an emergency.

This is the first time I've had to file a claim on a travel insurance policy, and all I can say is that it is great until you have to file a claim. At that point, the response time is horrible.

It is interesting that the company took my money in a few seconds via a website. Once I filed a claim, though, everything reverted to paper and snail mail. From the time I first filed my claim that our rental villa had been destroyed by hurricane Irma to the time I finally received my reimbursement was almost two months. That's two months that the company was earning interest on my money while I was paying interest to my credit card company. I realize the hurricanes resulted in many claims during this time - the processing company should hire some temps to help with the workload.

This was one of the rare occasions I have had to file a claim with travel insurance, and my experience was time consuming, frustrating, ultimately dissatisfying, and just plain awful. The dispute centered on a provision buried deep within the the policy language that required a contemporaneous written report of the incident in order to receive compensation. While I will not go into the details, in my case damage to a camera and lens occurred while staying in a rustic backpackers' lodge in a remote region of Borneo, where such formalities would be absurd. I did, however, make the management of the lodge aware of the incident verbally, and I also confirmed my account with them by e-mail after returning to the U.S. This documentation was provided to the insurer, but rejected as insufficient evidence that the damage occurred during the coverage period. In truth, the amount I was seeking -- $290 for repair of the camera and lens -- was not much more than the cost of the policy premium. I found the attitude of TravelSafe (and their claims agent TripMate) to be doctrinaire, inflexible and, frankly, sleazy. I had used TravelSafe on two previous occasions, but I will never use this company, or their underwriter, United States Fire Insurance Company, again.

    Thank you for your feedback on the policy. We appreciate you using InsureMyTrip for your travel insurance needs. We are sorry to learn that your property was damaged during your trip and are dissatisfied with this policy. The claims administrator is required to adjudicate claims based on the terms and conditions of the policy. With any travel insurance policy you would be required to have written documentation at the time of loss for damage to, or theft of your personal property. This will substantiate your claim and demonstrate that the event occurred while you were traveling. The following information can be found in the certificate of this policy:

    "Additional Claims Provisions Specific to Baggage: Your duties after loss of or damage to property or delay of baggage:
    In case of loss, theft, damage or delay of baggage or personal effects, You must:
    a) take all reasonable steps to protect, save or recover the property;
    b) promptly notify, in writing, either the police, hotel proprietors, ship lines, airlines, railroad, bus, airport or other station authorities, tour operators or group leaders, or any Common Carrier or bailee who has custody of
    Your property at the time of loss;
    c) produce records needed to verify the claim and its amount and permit copies to be made;
    d) provide to the Company, within 90 days from the date of loss, a detailed proof of loss signed and sworn to; and
    e) be examined, if requested."

    In the future, please consider calling us prior to purchasing a plan so that we can assist you in reviewing any specific concerns that you may have when you are selecting a travel insurance policy. Our toll free telephone number is 800-487-4722. We look forward to assisting you.

      Thanks, Melissa. Believe me, I am now quite familiar with the provisions of the policy you have quoted, the reasons for them, as well as the reasons why my claim was denied.

      Please allow me to point out, however, that the phrasing of part (b) is unclear and open to interpretation.

      The clause requires that written notification be made to any one of a list of entities -- police, hotel, etc. -- "or any Common Carrier or bailee who has custody of your property at the time of loss." Does the qualifier, "who has custody of your property at the time of loss" apply only to Common Carriers and bailees? Or to the entire enumerated list? Bailees, by definition, have custody of your proprerty. That's what makes them bailees. Common Carriers have custody not only of your property, but also of your person for the duration of their carriage. So, qualifying only these two types of entities is superfluous. That would seem to imply that the qualifying phrase, "have custody of your property" applies to the entire list, not only Common Carriers and bailees.

      In my case, the hotel did not have custody of or control over my property at the time the damage occurred. It was in my hands and in my control. Therefore, the requirement of wriiten notification has been misapplied in this case, and insurance should've paid.

      I brought up this point with TripMate, but they didn't buy it. For my part, I paid $290 for repair of the camera and lens, with which I was very pleased -- Photo Tech on West 36th Street in Manhattan. I recommend them highly. I've moved on with life.
